Insomniac’s Spider-Man Appears In New Across The Spider-Verse Trailer
The first full trailer for the highly anticipated sequel, Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse, recently dropped, and in a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment, it confirmed that the Peter Parker and Miles Morales versions created by PlayStation’s Insomniac Games, will feature in the movie.
The moment occurs around the 1:25-minute mark, where the protagonist Miles first arrives at some sort of hub where the Spider-Men across the multiverse appear to reside. As the camera pans out, you can see two Spider-Man versions walking across a platform, and, as discerned by the big white spider icon on the taller one’s chest, it’s clear that these are Insomniac’s Parker and Morales.
How much they’ll appear in the movie is unknown. Currently, all we see of them is this short snippet, and it could be that that’s the entirety of their screentime, though hopefully, they’ll get one or two speaking lines in, just for a fun little reference to the games. Spider-Man: Across The Spider-Verse will seemingly focus on some antagonist version of Spider-Man (confirmed to be Spider-Man 2099), who looks to turn other Spider-Men against the protagonist Morales, so it could even be that the Insomniac versions will be ‘villains’ in this movie.
Across The Spider-Verse will be a sequel to 2018’s Into the Spider-Verse, the Sony Pictures animated film that was arguably the trailblazer of the multiverse concept in the modern era of comic-book movies. The original movie’s plot had villain Kingpin attempt to create a device that could bring back his deceased family from another universe, and this in turn caused other versions of Spider-Man to appear in Miles Morales’ dimension. It’s unclear what will open the connection to the Spider-Verse this time.
Insomniac Games is a veteran development studio, which created iconic PlayStation franchises such as Spyro, and Ratchet & Clank. Though it has bounced around between publishers, it’s mostly known for its connection to PlayStation, which outright purchased the team after its massively successful 2018 title, Marvel’s Spider-Man.
Insomniac created its own original story for the character and continued building its own Spider-Man world with the smaller-scale 2020 spinoff, Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales. A full-blown sequel is in development, aptly titled Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, and it’s set to launch in 2023.
