Idris Elba Explains Why Knuckles Is So Mean In Sonic The Hedgehog 2

0

When Sonic the Hedgehog 2 spin dashed into theaters, the world got very familiar with Knuckles, the red echidna pulled right out of the Sonic games. Voiced by Idris Elba, this Knuckles was even less friendly, though.

He spends the majority of the movie as Sonic’s powerful nemesis, pulled into the fight by Robotnik (Jim Carrey). While the events of the movie give a look at what made Knuckles such a hard-nosed (and hard-fisted) adversary for our blue boy, now we are being given even more background on the character, thanks to Elba, Carrey, and director Jeff Fowler. Check out the GameSpot exclusive from Sonic 2’s home release, which is available digitally beginning May 24, below.

Now Playing: Sonic The Hedgehog 2: The Brute Force Power Of Knuckles

“Knuckles is the last of the echidnas. The echidnas are a very proud warrior race that have sort of gotten themselves extinct by virtue of their own aggressiveness,” Fowler explained. “Because he’s the last of his kind, he really has this deep sense of honor.”

Added Elba, “He’s not a warm and fuzzy guy. He’s straight to the point and means business. He doesn’t really understand emotion. He just understands brute force.”

That brute force is exactly what Robotnik needs, Carry said. “When he hears about the power of Knuckles, it’s a daunting task to dominate this character but that’s what he must do,” the actor offered. He must use Knuckles’ power to his own gains.”

You can find this clip, along with more featurettes on the home release of Sonic the Hedgehog 2! The film will be available on May 24 on digital. Beginning August 16, you can purchase it on 4K, Blu-ray, and DVD.
