How to stop Fallout: New Vegas from crashing

Fallout games are notorious for being buggy and prone to crashing. This is especially true for modded games since the margin for error is so much higher. Luckily there are a few ways to mitigate this problem yourself.

Fallout: New Vegas – How to stop crashing

There’s unfortunately not a one glove fits all method when it comes to solving crashes. Especially in the Fallout games because there are so many things that could potentially be causing them. There are some common ways to mitigate the crashing so it happens far less often though.

The first step is to download and install a few mods. The first is New Vegas Anti Crash followed by the Yukichigai Unofficial Patch and the Unofficial Patch NVSE Plus. Follow all of their instructions and install as directed. These mods will tighten up New Vegas and stop crashes from happening as often as they would otherwise. I’ve personally been using them for my most recent playthrough and after 20 or so hours I’ve only had about two crashes. So before doing anything else, install that mod.

If crashing still persists then the issue is going to be more specific to your own copy of New Vegas. If you’ve modded the game, double-check that each mod was installed correctly. Sometimes an incorrectly installed mod can cause a ton of unexpected issues. You should also check that each mod is up to date as well.

Unfortunately, if the crashing persists after doing all of the above, you may need to do a clean install of Fallout: New Vegas. I’ve been there many times and I know how annoying it can be but it’s often the easiest solution. And if problems persist past that point, there’s something on your PC that’s not agreeing with the game.

If all else fails, I highly recommend following the Viva New Vegas mod page which goes through every single mod you could need to avoid the problems that New Vegas likes to have.

Once the crashing in Fallout: New Vegas subsides, you can finally start trying out some cool mods. Check out this list of immersive mods for a more, well, immersive experience.
