How to learn where the beggar gets his coin

One of the earliest side quests you can find in Dragon’s Dogma 2 requires you to watch a beggar in Vermund to learn how he gets his coin. There are no quest markers or hints for this one, so it’s a frustratingly complex mission.

Also, even if you do everything right, you might find yourself banging your head against the wall for hours because this side quest is seemingly bugged for some players and an important door won’t unlock no matter what you do. Thankfully, Dragon’s Dogma 2 allows for a ton of player freedom so there’s a workaround.

How to Watch the Beggar in Dragon’s Dogma 2

To begin the quest, find the beggar near the statue in the center of Vermund. He tells stories all day from dawn until dusk, so you’ll find him there as long as the sun is up. You can give him money, but this doesn’t affect the outcome of the quest. You won’t get it back either, so you shouldn’t give him any of your gold.

How to Tail the Beggar in Dragon’s Dogma 2

To complete this quest, you need to follow the beggar and see where he goes after his storytelling session. He leaves the fountain when the sun goes down. To save time, rest at an inn or a house until morning. As soon as you get up, go find the beggar to ensure he’s there and everything is working properly. Then, visit the nearby inn and pass the time twice.

If done correctly, you can head outside and catch the beggar right as he’s leaving the town square. Tail him all the way to the slums on the eastern side of Vermund and you’ll end up at a tavern. It turns out he’s married to Hilda, the Beastren barmaid of this tavern, and he pays for everyone’s drinks every night. That’s oddly suspicious for a beggar, isn’t it?

The next part of the quest requires a bit of waiting since passing the time at the tavern is too risky and you might miss the beggar. Just sit and wait until he’s had his fill of ale. Eventually, he’ll turn around and head back into the city. Follow him all the way back into Merchant Quarter and you’ll see him go into a rather nice house.

How to Get Into the Beggar’s House

The key item required to complete this quest is located inside the beggar’s house, but no matter what you do, the door remains locked. Trust me, I tried visiting the house at all times of day under all conditions, I bought multiple rounds of ale for everyone at the tavern in the slums, and I even tried carrying the beggar into the house myself. Nothing works, so this quest has to be bugged.

I did find a workaround though, but it’s complicated. Save your game before trying this just in case. When you’re ready, pick up the beggar and carry him all the way outside of town to a place where nobody can see you. You don’t have to go too far outside the city walls, but you shouldn’t be anywhere near a guard.

Once you’re in a private location, kill the beggar. Don’t worry about his body, just leave it there. Once the beggar is dead, his house will be permanently unlocked. Head all the way back and inside you’ll find the Beggar’s Garb. It turns out that he wasn’t actually a beggar at all, but rather a noble taking advantage of people.

Should You Choose Hilda or Celina in Dragon’s Dogma 2?

You can either bring the Beggar’s Garb to his wife in the slums, Hilda, or his noble wife, Celina, to expose him. Each of these options leads to a radically different outcome, so choose wisely. No matter what your choice is, make sure to deliver the clothes before reviving Albert to ensure that the quest doesn’t get bugged any further. Once your quest log says to return in a few days, then you can go revive him.

Celina Ending

If you bring the Beggar’s Garb to Celina, she’ll be distraught and you’ll have to check in with her after a few days to complete the quest. After talking to Celina, head to the morgue in Vernworth to revive Albert the beggar.

You’ll need a Wakestone for this, which can be crafted with three Wakestone shards. These are rare, but the morgue has three of them waiting for you. Return to Albert’s home with the locked door after a few days and you’ll find guards stationed outside. Celina kills Albert before taking her own life, making this the more grim of the two endings to this quest.

Hilda Ending

If you bring the Beggar’s Garb to Hilda, Albert’s noble wife, then she’ll tell you to return to her in a few days after she confronts Albert about the beggar situation. After showing the clothes to Hilda, go revive Albert with a Wakestone. Come back in a few days and Hilda will thank you for telling her the truth. Albert will stop posing as a beggar, and you’ll get three Onyxes as a reward.
