Unlike those of its contemporary Diablo 4, the legendary weapons of Baldur’s Gate 3 actually live up to their name. These are some of the rarest items in the game, hidden away behind tricky quest lines or obscene price tags, but their raw power makes them more than worth the effort. Naturally, the earlier you can get your hands on these weapons the better, and you can claim one, the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane, as early as Act one with the right strategy. Sound good? Two methods for getting the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane in Baldur’s Gate 3

Method 1 – The Act one method

The Silver Sword of the Astral Plane is a solid legendary sword by all accounts, but its key distinguishing feature is the fact that you can get your hands on it extremely early in the game. In fact, you can grab it in Act one, as soon as you gain access to the Mountain Pass area in the north-west section of the map. At the entrance to this area you’ll encounter the Githyanki Patrol, a group of powerful early-game foes, and a Red Dragon. Their leader, Inquisitor Voss, is the key to claiming this sword early on.

Taking on this encounter normally is out of the question at this stage of the game, but luckily for you you don’t have to do so to get your hands on the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane. All you need to do is disarm Voss, and he’ll drop the sword before fleeing on the Dragon, letting you grab the blade and improving your chances in the battle in one fell swoop. Sounds easy enough, but there are lots of details you’ll need to keep in mind if this heist is to go off without a hitch.

Before you approach the Githyanki Patrol, you’ll want to do two things. Firstly, ensure that Lae’zel isn’t in your party: having her with you will alert the Githyanki prematurely, preventing you from sneakily stealing the sword. Secondly, make sure you have access to the Command spell. Shadowheart knows this spell by default, so if you have her in your party you’re good to go. Otherwise, you can teach it to any party member by purchasing a Command Scroll from a merchant.

Once you’re all set up, head to the Mountain Pass and locate the Githyanki Patrol. Using an Invisibility spell or other method, sneak your way onto the wooden bridge overlooking the patrol, and locate your target: Kith’rak Voss. At this point, I’d recommend that you save your game, since it’s very easy for the rest of the mission to go wrong if the gods of fate are unkind. Use the Command: Drop spell on Voss, and cross all your fingers and toes: This has a very low chance of success, so be ready to reload your save should it fail. If it works, Voss will drop his sword, jump on the Red Dragon, and fly off, leaving you free to pick it up. Well, mostly free: you’ll still have to take on the rest of the Githyanki Patrol. Once the sword is yours, however, it doesn’t matter if you defeat them or not: you’ll still make off with it regardless.

Method 2 – The Act three method

While the above is much more exciting, I figured I’d detail the ‘proper’ way of getting the Silver Sword of the Astral Plane as well, for any purists out there averse to save-scumming. You’ll have to wait until Act three to get the sword this way, and you’ll also need to have progressed Lae’zel’s quest line, at least to the point where ‘The Githyanki Warrior’ quest becomes available.

During this quest, you’ll visit Sharress’ Caress at Wyrm’s Crossing, and encounter Raphael. After speaking with him, agree to his deal to receive the Orphic Hammer. Head down a floor to find Kith’rak Voss, who will exchange his iconic Silver Sword for the Orphic Hammer you just received. This method is much less fiddly than the Act one method, with the tradeoff that you won’t get to enjoy the incredible power of the sword during the game’s early sections.
