How To Get The Compass

God of War Ragnarok has you exploring the nine realms, battling gods, and solving various puzzles. You’ll need a handy compass to guide your way.

Early on in your travels in God of War Ragnarok, you will have no need of a compass. You are driven purely by the main storyline, carrying you along a fairly linear path. Eventually, however, you’ll begin collecting side quests, known as Favors, which will become available as you gain access to open world sections in the realms.

Once your playable space expands, it would be extremely difficult to juggle objectives without the use of a compass. If you’ve been wondering when you’ll get one, read on to find out.

Where To Find The Compass

Fortunately, the compass is provided fairly early in the game’s narrative, not long after traveling to Svartalfheim. Once you arrive in Nidavellir and explore the city for a while, you’ll come across a tavern. Inside, you’ll meet a dwarven bard who will give you directions to find Durlin. He will also provide your first Favor (read: side quest). This side quest, In Service Of Asgard, has you boating to the north, shutting down mining rigs in the bay.

Once you leave through the western exit from the tavern, Sindri will show up and offer you a fancy looking device. That will allow you to “find anything your heart desires.” Really, it’s just a simple compass.

How To Use The Compass

The compass will appear across the top of your screen, like in many other RPGs, providing directional information as well as the distance and location to your tracked objective. Your main objective will show up with the now familiar orange icon with a white paw on it, while Favors will show up as a blue banner icon.

The compass doesn’t simply point directly toward your objective. It will actually point you toward the shortest path to reach your objective. This isn’t easily apparent when your simply boating around the bay, but once you reach more complicated, maze-like locations, the compass will assist you in navigating toward “anything your heart desires.”

Under Settings and Gameplay, you can customize your HUD. Changing the Compass entry to “Swipe” allows you to dismiss the compass at the top of the screen with a brush of the touchpad, granting you a more cinematic feel when you desire while keeping the utility of the compass just a thumb’s touch away.
