Minecraft’s unique items are sought after by many fans, including objects like armor enchantments and Beacons. One, in particular, is Elytra, a set of rare wings that are the only flying mechanism available for Survival Mode. If you’re wondering how to obtain this item, here’s how to get Elytra in Minecraft.

A Step-by-Step Guide To Get Elytra in Minecraft

  1. Find/Make the End Portal.

In Survivor Mode, you can find the End Portal by throwing the Eye of Ender in the air to guide you to a stronghold. It will eventually go towards the ground when closer to the area.
Once the Eye of Ender falls directly into a block, dig underneath this section until you have reached the stronghold. You’ll find the End Portal after some time, but make sure you come prepared before entering inside it since you will have to battle the Ender Dragon to achieve the rare wings.
In Creative Mode, you can create the Portal anywhere you would like. In addition, you can find a tutorial here on how to build it.

  2. Enter the End Portal and defeat the Ender Dragon.

Elytra is in the End City, and the only way to get there is by defeating the Ender Dragon. If you would like some tips and tricks on efficiently killing this beast, you can find a guide here.
The process is a bit easier in Creative Mode since you have the option to fly and acquire any items you may need. Both of these methods work as long as the Ender Dragon is eliminated.

  3. Find the End Gateway.

Now that you’ve defeated the Ender Dragon, the End Gateway will appear. You’ll need to look around to find it. The entrance should be somewhere in the air covered in Bedrock, as shown here:

  4. Enter inside the gateway.

To access the entrance, you can either fly up in Creative Mode or use blocks to guide your way there in Survival Mode. You’ll have to remove the Bedrock around it if you want to enter. Creative Mode is the most straightforward option since you can easily break the blocks.
Bedrock is tricky to remove in Survival Mode because these blocks are unbreakable. However, the Minecraft community has compiled a list of methods to break the Bedrock, and you can find it here.

  5. Look for the End City.

Elytra can be found on an End Ship near the End City, and locating it is more challenging than you think. The End City is a gigantic place filled with many Endermen where you’ll have to build bridges to get yourself across each area. Creative Mode does make the experience a lot less stressful, but you’ll still have to fly around aimlessly until you find the ship.
End City Finders are available, such as Chunkbase, which can help you in your expedition. You can also increase your Render Distance to give yourself a better chance to see the End City.
