While you may think adopting a turtle in this farming sim is easy, it’s a bit tougher than it seems. Here’s how you can get a pet turtle for your farm in Stardew Valley.

Stardew Valley: How to get a pet turtle

In the Stardew Valley 1.6 update, players can now adopt two adorable turtles. One has a normal green shell while the other has a purple shell. You can adopt a pet turtle in Stardew Valley by reaching max relationship level with your main pet and purchasing a second pet bowl.

Before you’re even able to get more than one pet, you need to reach the maximum relationship level with your main pet. This is with the first pet you got at the beginning of your Stardew Valley playthrough. You can increase your relationship level by making sure to pet your dog or cat daily. Right-click them to pat them, and they’ll respond with a heart icon.

Soon enough, you’ll notice they have five filled hearts in the relationship menu and you’ll get a message in the bottom left corner of your screen saying that your pet loves you. Make sure you wait until you get this message because I had full hearts with my dog, yet I had to pet them a couple more times before I got the love message.

After that, you’ll want to head to Robin’s shop and purchase a second Pet Bowl under the farm buildings menu. You’ll need 5,000 gold and 25 Hardwood for this, but it’ll be created instantly.

A day after the relationship with your pet reaches max level, Marnie will send you a letter. She’ll tell you that she sees how much you care for your pet and will allow you to adopt more.

Now you can finally head to Marnie’s Ranch and adopt a pet turtle. The cheapest turtle you can buy is 60,000 gold, while the turtle with the purple shell is available for a whopping 500,000 gold. Once you make your purchase, you’ll find your pet turtle back at your farm. I found mine inside of my house roaming around.

Stardew Valley 1.6 introduces more than just pet turtles. You can also craft Big Chests and unlock Mastery Points.
