Fishing is a mini-game hidden in Persona 4 Golden that many players will miss due to the lack of a clear objective in obtaining the Fishing Rod. Fish act as healing items that can be used in the TV world to heal either your HP or SP. Some of the more difficult fish can go as far as restoring all of an ally’s SP, which is invaluable even in the later sections of the game.
Fishing does take up an entire afternoon or evening, depending on when you decide to fish. You can fish on the river that runs through Inaba and later move on to fish in the ocean for more difficult fish after getting a better fishing rod. Getting powerful healing items is an excellent use of time, and with the addition of a fun mini-game, fishing is a very valuable pass time.
Getting The Fishing Rod
To get the River Rod, you’ll need to show the old man at Samegawa River a fishing hook. To get the hook, you’ll first need to go to Tatsuhime Shrine and talk to the boy, who will ask for a drink. Head to the Central Shopping District and look for a vending machine that sells a soda called The Natural. Bring this soda back to the boy and give it to him in exchange for a Tatsuhime Ladybug.
After receiving the ladybug, go to Shiroku in the Southern Shopping District at night and talk to the hostess, who will feed the ladybug to her pet fish in exchange for a fishhook. Take this fishhook back to the old man, who will reward you with the River Rod, which will allow you to fish the Samegawa River either during the day or evening. Bait for fishing are bugs caught at the Tatsuhime Shrine or bread crumbs obtained by trading bugs to the hostess of Shiroku. Higher-level bugs will result in better bait to catch rare fish.
How To Fish And Fish In The Ocean
To fish, head to the Samegawa River with bait and interact with the water. How many times you can cast depends on your Diligence stat and will require bait in the form of bread crumbs or bugs. The more Diligence you have, the longer you can fish for. Whenever you get a bite, a bar will appear at the bottom of the screen. Keep the icon within the blue section of the bar and press the corresponding button to reel in the line when it’s in this section. Fish can then be consumed as healing items in the TV world or traded for Jewels, which can then be traded for new weapons at Shiroku.
After catching The Guardian — the biggest fish in Samegawa — and after you’ve taken three long rides on your motorcycle, return to the old man who gave you the River Rod. After showing him the Guardian, he will provide you with the Deep-Sea Rod, allowing you to fish at Shichiri Beach. Fishing here will give you access to new fish using other combinations of bait and a new Sea Guardian to hunt for.
