With this in mind, it’s no wonder why people often choose Gengar as their main Ghost-Type due to its incredible stats and abilities. Getting this Pokemon is not as simple as other evolutions, though, and will require a bit of trading.

Where To Get Gastly & Haunter

To be able to get Gengar, you will first need to catch Gastly and evolve it into Haunter, or catch a Haunter to later evolve into Gengar. Luckily, these Pokemon are relatively easy to find around Paldea and can be caught using a Poke Ball or Great Ball. They will only appear at night, though, so if it is daytime, you will have to wait around a half-hour for it to become night. You can also change the clock time on your Switch system to skip ahead if you don’t feel like waiting.

If you are still towards the beginning of the game, you will want to try catching Gastly rather than Haunter. The Gastly you can find will be much lower in level and easier to catch for beginners. The best area to find low-level Gastlys is in West Province (Area One). Follow our directions below to find one.

  • Start by flying to the West Province (Area One) – Central Pokemon Center.
  • When you arrive, there should immediately be some Gastlys in the area just outside the Pokemon Center, especially if you eat or make a sandwich that gives you a boost to Ghost-Type Encounter Power. This will increase your chances of finding a Gastly.
  • You can either approach the Pokemon or throw a Poke Ball with the ZR Button to grab its attention and begin a battle.
  • These Gastly will be around Level 16 to 18, so they should be easy to catch. You can dwindle down their HP slowly, and then catch them with a regular Poke Ball.

Your Gastly will evolve into Haunter on its own when it reaches Level 25. You can make the process faster by using Experience Candies on your Gastly, which you can get from completing Tera Raid Battles.

A great location to find Haunter in its habitat is in North Province (Area One). The Haunters in this location will be very high in level, so you should only approach them if you have the team to do so. Here’s how you can find one.

  • Start by flying to the North Province (Area One) Pokemon Center.
  • You should be able to find a few Haunters just outside of the Pokemon Center, especially if you have eaten something with Ghost-Type Encounter Power. They will usually be surrounded by a group of Gastly.
  • Approach the Haunter directly or throw a Poke Ball to startle it.
  • The Haunter will most likely be around Level 50 to 52, so you will want to make sure you have a high enough level Pokemon to battle it. You will want to catch it with a Great Ball or Dusk Ball.

Now that you have your Haunter, you can move on to the process of evolving it into your very own Gengar!

How To Evolve Haunter Into Gengar

Unfortunately for those looking for an easy evolution process, Haunter won’t evolve into Gengar just by simply leveling it up. Instead, you will have to initiate a few trading processes to get your Gengar. There are two different methods you can use, which we will guide you through.

Image of the Poke Portal Link Trade with friends in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet.

  • The first thing you will want to do is initiate a trade between yourself and a friend. You can do this through the Poke Portal ‘Link Trade’.
  • Through ‘Link Trade’, you can either have your friend set a Link Code or you can set one yourself. You will then want to give this code to your friend.
  • You will then be able to choose the Pokemon you wish to trade. You will want to trade any of the Haunters you have with your friend.
  • To make the process faster, your friend can also trade a Haunter and you can keep their Haunter after it evolves. If you want your original Haunter back, though, you can initiate another trade between your friend where you swap your Pokemon back to each other.

The other method of getting Gengar through trading will be easier if you don’t have someone to trade with.

  • First, you will want to catch a Pincurchin. This Pokemon can be found in any beach areas in the game, including the beach by North Province (Area Three) and the beaches outside Levincia. In these locations, you will see black spikes coming up from the sand, which will be the Pincurchin.
  • After you catch your Pincurchin, you can approach a lady in red shorts in the middle of the city of Levincia, whose location is shown on the map above. She will ask to trade her Haunter with your Pincurchin.
  • To initiate the trade, give her your Pincurchin and you will receive the Haunter. After talking with her, the Haunter will immediately start evolving into Gengar.
  • You will then have a Level 25 Gengar without having to deal with the complicated process of trading with a friend!
