How To Climb Converted Fringe Tower

Climbing the Converted Fringe Tower in Elden Ring can be tough, but this guide can help.

Elden Ring contains so many puzzles and secrets that it’s nearly impossible to figure them all out on your first playthrough. Or even subsequent playthroughs for that matter. One of these puzzles centers around the Converted Fringe Tower, a location in Liurnia of the Lakes that contains a couple of powerful items.

Entering the Converted Fringe Tower is easy, but climbing all the way to the top is a different matter altogether. Like any other noteworthy magical location, most of the tower is sealed off by a magical barrier that allows passage only after the player completes some very specific requirements.

Where Is The Converted Fringe Tower?

Converted Fringe Tower in Liurnia of the Lakes

The tower is located in the northeastern portion of Liurnia on top of a cliff overlooking the sea. If you have most of the Sites of Grace in the region unlocked, simply fast-travel to the Frenzied Flame Village Outskirts and turn around to see the tower in all of its glory. If you’ve just entered the area from Limgrave, start at the Church or Irith and make your way north until you reach the Church of Vows. From there, head northeast past the Minor Erdtree and you’ll reach the Converted Fringe Tower in no time. Be mindful of the Troll Knight waiting outside.

If you make your way inside, you’ll notice a statue in the center of the room with a message in front of it that reads: “May erudition light the way!”. This is a clue that hints you’re going to need the Erudition gesture to progress past the barrier, as well as a Glintstone Crown that lights up when you use it. You can acquire everything you need by completing Thops’s questline. If you haven’t talked to him already, head back to the Church of Irith and pay him a visit.

Raya Lucaria Academy in Elden Ring

A lot of this has been covered in a previous guide so we’re going to keep things brief. Thops wants to enter the Raya Lucaria Academy and needs a Glintstone Key in order to gain access. The first key is guarded by Glintstone Dragon Smarag, a boss located just west of the academy. Grab the key (with or without actually fighting the dragon) and make your way to Raya Lucaria. Once there, you’ll find the second Glintstone Key on a corpse hanging from the Church of the Couckoo’s ceiling.

Bring this second key to Thops and he’ll teach you the Erudition gesture. The NPC won’t accept the first key, so you’ll need to get the second one no matter what to complete his quest. In addition to the gesture, you’re also going to need a Glintstone crown to access the upper levels of the Converted Fringe Tower. There are nine types of Glintstone crowns in Elden Ring but only five of them can help you solve the puzzle. These are:

  • Olivinus Glintstone Crown
  • Twinsage Glintstone Crown
  • Lazuli Glintstone Crown
  • Karolos Glintstone Crown
  • Witch’s Glinstone Crown

Olivinus, Twinsage, Lazuli, and Karolos crowns can be acquired at any time from the academy while the Witch’s Glintstone Crown can only be obtained after completing Sorceress Sellen’s questline, regardless of the outcome.

Once you have everything you need, head back to the tower and use the Erudition gesture in front of the barrier while wearing one of the aforementioned Glintstone Crowns. With the barrier open, you can now freely make your way up the tower. As soon as you reach the first room a School of Graven Mages will emerge from the ground. While somewhat intimidating, this is a very weak foe so dispatch it quickly and proceed to the next level.

Take the elevator found in the next room and make your way up to stairs until you reach the third and final chamber. Open the chest to find the Canon of Haima and Gavel of Haima spells. It’s also worth exploring the area around the tower as you can find a corpse with an item on it along with various crafting materials, including the exceedingly rare Miquella’s Lily.
