How To Build & Use A Cartography Table

Want to share your map with friends in Valheim? Building a Cartography Table can help. Here’s how you do it.

Quick Links

Valheim is all about exploring, making your way through the vast wilds of the Norse afterlife, and finding all sorts of monsters, biomes, and bosses. Your map is a critical part of that exploration, and as you move around more, it fills in automatically. But how does that work when you play with friends?

The map isn’t shared between players on a world, so at first, it might feel like there’s no way to share your markers and map data, but Iron Gate has thought of a solution: the Cartography Table. Here’s how you build and use this map-sharing item.

How To Build The Cartography Table

The Cartography Table is thankfully a fairly early-game item requiring only:

  • 10 Fine Wood
  • 10 Bone Fragments
  • 2 Bronze
  • 5 Leather Scraps
  • 4 Raspberries

You’ll come across most of those materials before you even reach the Swamps. The only one that might be tricky to find is Fine Wood. You can get it from cutting down Birch and Oak trees in the Meadows. However, you’ll need at least a Bronze Axe to do so, which you can make after you’ve mined Copper and Tin.

Once you have all the materials, simply pull out your Hammer and build the Cartography Table wherever you have a Workbench.

Using The Cartography Table

To use the Cartography Table, all you need to do is aim at the left side (the box) and interact with it. Your current map data will be added to the Cartography Table’s total map data, and if you interact with the right side (the map), the map data of every other player who has interacted with the table will be added to yours.

Areas they’ve explored that you haven’t will appear in a light gray color. All in all, this lets you quickly share maps with everyone on a server and stay updated with ease. Finally, you’ll be able to see where your friend went when they stole the Karve and sailed into the night.

Sharing Map Markers

While you can share markers, the map won’t share boss locations that you got from Vegvisirs. The Cartography Table only shares the markers of the last player to add their map, so if you want to share exactly where you found a Leviathan, record your discoveries again before your friend uses the table.
