Tulip, better known as “The Bewitching Beautician”, is one of the last few Gym Leaders that Trainers will come across in their Victory Road path in Pokemon Scarlet & Violet. You will see her picture all around the city of Alfornada in beauty campaigns and more.
Tulip commands a Psychic-Type team, ranging from Level 44 to 45. Before you can take her on though, you must first complete her Gym Test to gain access to her battle.
Gym Test: Take On Emotional Spectrum Practice
Before your battle with Tulip begins, you must first complete the Emotional Spectrum Practice Gym Test. This test is relatively simple and straightforward, and shouldn’t take too long.
After you have introduced yourself to the woman at the front desk of the Alfornada Gym, she will instruct you to head outside and go directly left. There will be a small field right next to the gym. Approach the woman wearing black, named Dendra, with a Medicham standing next to her.
When you begin talking to her, she will give you instructions on how to complete Emotional Spectrum Practice. The only thing you need to do with this Gym Test is copy whatever emotion Dendra’s Medicham is displaying. The four different emotions are as follows:
- X Button – Anger
- A Button – Joy
- B Button – Surprise
- Y Button – Excitement
When you begin the test, all you need to do is click the correct button that corresponds with the emotion that Medicham is showing. The icon for the emotion will also appear at the top of the screen. You will have a few seconds to click the right button, and then you will move on to the next emotion. Yellow is for joy, blue is for surprise, green is for excitement, and red is for anger.
After you finish the first round of Emotional Spectrum Practice, you will begin a battle with the first Trainer, Emily. Her team is as follows:
- Gothorita (Level 43)
- Kirlia (Level 43)
Gothorita is a Psychic-Type, while Kirlia is a Dual-Type of Psychic and Fairy. Bug, Ghost, and Dark-Type will be especially effective against Psychic, while Fairy will be weak to Poison and Steel. Use these types to deal critical damage to Emily’s team.
After your first Trainer battle, you will head into the second round of Emotional Spectrum Practice. This will be exactly the same as the first round where you will be given a few seconds to click the correct matching emotion. The emotions used are the same in the second round, as well.
Once you complete this round, you will go into your second and last Trainer battle against Rafael. His team is as follows:
- Grumpig (Level 43)
- Medicham (Level 43)
- Indeedee (Level 43)
Grumpig is a Psychic-Type, Medicham is a dual Fighting and Psychic-Type, and Indeedee is also a Dual-Type of Psychic and Normal. You can stick to Bug, Dark, or Ghost-Type with Grumpig, while Medicham you will want to use either Bug, Dark, Ghost, Flying, or Fairy-Type. Psychic moves are also effective against Fighting-Types, but you will want to avoid this due to Medicham also being a Psychic-Type. Finally, Indeedee will be vulnerable to Bug, Dark, Ghost, or Fighting-Types.
When you defeat your final Trainer, you will be able to head back to the Gym to start your battle with Tulip.
Gym Leader Tulip
When you have completed your Emotional Spectrum Training, head back inside the Gym to talk to the woman at the front desk. There, you will be able to begin your battle with Tulip. Before you start, though, you will want to make sure your team is ready. You should bring along either Bug, Dark, or Ghost-Types to deal a large amount of damage to Tulip’s team. Her Pokemon are high in level as well, so shoot for your Pokemon being anywhere above Level 45.
How To Beat Farigiraf
First up on Tulip’s team is Farigiraf. This Pokemon will be Level 44 and is a Dual-Type of Psychic and Normal. For this Pokemon, you will want to stick with either Bug or Dark-Types, as Ghost-Types have no effect on Normal-Types. Some good opponents for Farigiraf include Scyther or Houndoom.
How To Beat Espathra
Next, Tulip will send out her Espathra. This Pokemon is Level 44 and is a solo Psychic-Type. You can use either Bug, Ghost, or Dark-Types on this Pokemon, however if you are wanting to stick to the same Pokemon you used against Farigiraf, they will most likely be Bug or Dark-Type. Esparatha has relatively high Speed stats, so you will want to make sure you bring a faster Pokemon or one that has good Defense or HP.
How To Beat Gardevoir
Next up on Tulip’s team is Gardevoir. This Pokemon will be Level 44 and is a Dual Psychic/Fairy-Type. This means you will want to use Poison, Steel, or Ghost-Types. You might have to switch out your previous Pokemon to battle Gardevoir. Gardevoir uses a move set containing a lot of Status Moves, so you will want to use a Pokemon that can prevent some of these moves. Gardevoir also has a high Special Attack stat, so use a Pokemon with a significant Special Defense stat to prevent critical damage.
How To Beat Florges
The last Pokemon on Tulip’s team will be Florges. This Pokemon will be Level 45, and is a Fairy-Type with a Tera Type of Psychic. As all other Gym Leaders have done, Tulip will immediately turn Florges into its Tera Type, making it solely a Psychic-Type. This means you can use any Bug, Dark, or Ghost-Type moves on it. You can choose to Terastallize your Pokemon as well to get a leg-up in the final battle.
Rewards From Alfornada Gym
When you finally complete your battle with the Alfornada Gym Leader, Tulip, you will get some nice rewards in return. You will receive around 6,010 Pokemon Dollars if this is your seventh gym and TM120 (Psychic). You will also now be able to command any Pokemon Level 55 and under.
