How do relationships work in Fields of Mistria? – Destructoid

One of the biggest aspects of Fields of Mistria is the relationship you can develop with each villager. Whether they’re romanceable or not, you are able to build connections, encounter heart events at certain friendship levels, and get unique rewards.

It can be confusing trying to figure out how much effort you need to put in when building these relationships, but there’s actually a fixed amount of friendship points each action will provide.

Each villager in Fields of Mistria currently has a maximum of four hearts which can be earned, although according to the Early Access roadmap and the hearts on display in-game for each villager, this is set to increase to a maximum of 10 hearts.

Each heart is worth 80 friendship points, so you’ll need to earn at least 80 points before you can increase your heart level with a villager. The number of points you’ll earn with each action is as follows:

Action Friendship points
Talking 7 points
Giving a ‘neutral’ gift 3 points
Giving a ‘liked’ gift 10 points
Giving a ‘loved’ gift 20 points

Giving a ‘disliked’ or ‘hated’ gift will not negatively impact your friendship with anyone in Fields of Mistria, but it will also not provide any friendship points towards the next heart level.

On a villager’s birthday (displayed on both the in-game calendar and via a notification at the start of the day), you’ll earn an additional 20 points for any gift you provide, even ‘disliked’ or ‘hated’ gifts. This means that even if you give them something they don’t like, you’ll earn a minimum of 20 friendship points.

The total number of friendship points you will earn through giving someone a birthday gift is:

Action Friendship points
Giving a ‘loved’ gift 40 points
Giving a ‘liked’ gift 30 points
Giving a ‘neutral’ gift 23 points
Giving a ‘disliked’ gift 20 points
Giving a ‘hated’ gift 20 points

You won’t receive this 20 point boost for simply talking to a villager on their birthday, sadly.

The only other way to increase friendship levels with a villager in Fields of Mistria is by completing their Request Board quests.

These are usually pretty easy to complete, as long as you complete them within the season they were requested. However, if you don’t manage to complete a request within the season, you can always save it for the following year and complete it then.
