HBO might be aiming for a shorter second season of House of the Dragon than the 10-episode run of the first. That will reportedly fit the overall vision for the series, with the show’s creative team supposedly plotting out Season 3 already.

Deadline says that, originally, the sophomore season of House of the Dragon was supposed to be 10 episodes. But that apparently changed to eight after showrunner Ryan Condal and author George R.R. Martin convened to chart out the stories and battles for each season.

That means HBO could greenlight Season 3 soon to start the ball rolling on casting and a production plan, per Deadline. It’s undecided for how long House of the Dragon will ultimately run, with the report adding that Condal and Martin continue seesawing between three or four seasons.

Condal has confirmed House of the Dragon Season 2 will feature five new dragons. The show is supposed to start filming again soon. As for a release window, HBO programming boss Casey Bloys has previously stated a 2024 premiere “is a good guess” for the second season.

House of the Dragon was super popular for HBO, averaging 29 million viewers for each episode during the first season. HBO is also eyeing a Game of Thrones spin-off about Jon Snow for the future.
