In Hogwarts Legacy, players have the chance to fly above the area in and around Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Of the several types of flying mounts, the first one that players get is their trusty broom, which can be bought from Spintwitches Sporting Needs in Hogsmeade. However, upgrading the broom isn’t easy. In order to get an improved flying broom, players have to complete a series of side quests involving challenging Quidditch player Imelda Reyes to several races.
The second race against Imelda is where the quest “Sweeping the Competition” occurs and this will also give players the chance to upgrade their broom flying to the second tier. This quest is only available after already completing “Flight Test,” which unlocks the first tier of broom upgrades.
Start by flying or using your Floo Flames fast-travel to the Irondale settlement. If you haven’t discovered the settlement yet, it is east of Feldcroft, and can be found simply by heading straight south from Hogwarts Castle or around the mountain from Feldcroft. Imelda Reyes’ location will be just northeast of Irondale, up on a cliff with other eager students around her. The broom marker will be visible on your map once getting close enough.
The racecourse for Sweeping the Competition is significantly longer and more difficult than the first of the trials. Make sure to use and/or hold the boost button as much as possible as this is the main element that will give you an advantage over Imelda. As with the first race, hitting the yellow bubbles is key because not only does it give players a speed boost, but it makes their normal boost meter last much longer too. That means, as you race, hitting all the yellow bubbles will give you infinite boost.
This is a good strategy for each of the broom trial races, but it also gets more difficult as each one progresses from the last. Of course, the tradeoff is the faster you go, the more unwieldy the broom-flying becomes, so winning the race and going for your best time means having a delicate and focused strategy. A small slip can cause the whole attempt to fail. One recommendation during races is to find the right height for the next ring first, then adjust your left-and-right from there.
If you don’t beat Imelda in the race, you’ll have to redo the trial until you are the winner. Once you’ve achieved victory, speak with Imelda, and she will tell you about the next race and its location. After that, head back to Hogsmeade and go to Spintwitches Sporting Needs. Walk inside and speak to Albie Weekes, who will inform you that after finishing the second trial, he’ll need some time before the next upgrade is ready. Realistically, it takes Albie about 30 seconds.
So, if you aren’t in a hurry, simply wait there in the shop for a moment, and you will get a notification pretty quickly. The second-tier upgrade for the broom costs $4000, so you will want to save up and be ready to purchase the upgrade. Once you do, your broom will be faster, more nimble, and have more choices available going forward.
