Quest Prerequisites

Before you try to find the Map Chamber, you’ll need to complete the necessary quests first. To start, you’ll need to progress the story until the Secrets Of The Restricted Section quest is available. In this mission, Sebastian will teach you how to use the Disillusionment spell that makes you nearly invisible. After exploring the Forbidden Section of the Library and completing an ancient magic trial, you’ll find an important book that Professor Fig has been looking for.

After scanning the book, you’ll find some important pages are missing. To find them, you’ll first need to help Olivander find his family’s stolen wand. This leads you to the quest, Jackdaw’s Rest. You’ll need to learn Expelliarmus before you can take on this quest, so make sure to prioritize Professor Hecat’s assignments since she’ll teach you the spell. Finally, after finding the spirit of Jackdaw, the thief who stole the wand and the missing pages, he’ll lead you to the entrance of the cavern where he died.

Trials and battles in Jackdaw's Tomb

After entering the cavern, you’ll need to solve some basic puzzles. The first type will require you to hit three targets with your basic cast spell within a limited amount of time. Doing so will open a locked gate, allowing you to proceed further into the cavern. The other kind of puzzle involves moving floating platforms around by using Accio. You will typically start by pulling the platform to you, and then standing on it and using the wall anchors to pull you and the platform around the room.

After completing a handful of puzzles, and battling waves of giant spiders, you’ll reach the end of the cavern and find Jackdaw’s body, along with a broken wand and the missing pages. This will trigger a battle against a few Sentries. After defeating them, you will be led to the Map Chamber by following traces of ancient magic.

The Map Chamber

Player, Professor Fig, and Percival Rackham talk in the Map Chamber

Inside the chamber, you’ll find four large portraits, three of which are empty. You are then met by the portrait of Percival Rackham, one of the Keepers of ancient magic that was alive centuries ago. He explains that in order to learn more about the room, you’ll need to bring back the book first. You’ll then return to Hogwarts castle and get Professor Fig up to speed.

Together, you return with the book and place it on the pedestal. This causes the Map Chamber to activate, revealing a holographic map of Hogwarts below your feet. Percival then tells you that in order for him and the Keepers to fully trust you, you must complete four trials, one for each Keeper. These trials are major parts of the main quest line and will only unlock one at a time.

Unlocking the Map Chamber also gives you access to upgrading your Talents in your field guide menu. Each time you level up, you’ll get another Talent point that you can use to upgrade the effectiveness of spells, potions, plants, and spell slot upgrades.
