Hobbiton Is Now Listed On Airbnb, But Good Luck Getting A Reservation

The official Hobbiton movie set in Matamata, New Zealand where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit were filmed, will soon allow visitors to book a room on the grounds through Airbnb.

For the first time, the owners of the movie set are listing a stay at the site through the popular homestay website. Specifically, visitors can book the Millhouse, which is being transformed into a two-bedroom home. So no, it’s not a Hobbit hole, but it’s still on site and looks extremely cosy.

This is an extremely limited opportunity, as the venue is only offering three two-night stays, including March 2-4, March 9-11, and March 16-18 in 2023.

The Hobbiton Movie Set, which is privately owned by has a licensing arrangement with Middle-earth Enterprises, is hosting this event to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

As for the space, the Millhouse will feature a “writing nook fit for Bilbo Baggins,” as well as “homey decor” curated by Brian Massey, the creative director for the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies.

Anyone lucky enough to secure a booking will also get private access to their own Hobbit hole and an evening banquet at the Green Dragon Inn with a meal including beaf and ale stew, roast chickens, baked breads, and plenty of ale. Visitors also get second breakfast and elevenses. A private tour of the Hobbiton movie set is also included.

The Airbnb listing shows a rate of $6/night, but whether or not that’s a mistake is unclear. Reservations open at 10 AM NZDT on December 14. There should be a ton of demand for the three two-night stays, so there is pretty much no chance you’ll be able to book.

The Hobbiton Movie Set tour is open now in Matamata, New Zealand, allowing visitors to walk through Bag End on a guided tour and then pop into the Green Dragon for a pint. The attraction is expanding in 2023 with the opportunity to actually go inside a Hobbit hole.
