‘Hello?’ Chris Philp cut off Good Morning Britain as interview goes awry | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Good Morning Britain presenters Susanna Reid and Martin Lewis were joined by Chief Secretary to the Treasury Chris Philp to discuss the latest government U-turn by Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng. When explaining how he understood the change and battling through the fierce questioning from Reid and Lewis, the studio lost connection with Philp and was left speaking to himself.

Touching on the cost of living crisis and the 45p tax U-turn which Kwarteng recently announced today, Philp explained: “You’re right I haven’t seen it and I can’t see it on the screen as I am standing here in Birmingham.

“But I imagine when they use the £30,000, I am just speculating, but when they use the £30,000 figure they will have to work out the tax saving.

“They were doing that to illustrate the income tax saving of someone on approximately median earnings.

“You are right to point out that somebody on that level of earnings would be unlikely to get a mortgage to fund the £5,000 house unless of course they were doing so with a partner but I suspect that is why they did it.”

Viewers of the show also noticed the struggle between the presenters and Philp and took to their social media accounts to speak about the moment.

@IAmSamJMartin laughed: “Hahaha someone’s pulled the plug #GMB.”

@JenRandall6 commented: “Lost the signal my signal #Philp #GMB.”

@Fluffadelic sarcastically wrote: “lost the connection’ #GMB.”

@doubltop quipped: “#GMB that was convenient!” (sic)

Good Morning Britain wasn’t the only broadcaster to suffer a technical blunder when speaking to a member of government, as Laura Kuenssenberg suffered the same issue when speaking to Prime Minster Liz Truss on Sunday morning.

The transmission cut off and showed a black screen several times during the interview.

Just before the start of Truss’s segment, the show went completely off-air and played the BBC News opening over the start of the interview.

Good Morning Britain airs weekdays from 6am on ITV.
