Heartstopper star details ‘pressure’ for season 2 after ‘mind-blowing’ response | TV & Radio | Showbiz & TV

Heartstopper’s Yasmin Finney detailed the unexpected pressure of filming season two following the Netflix drama’s popular debut.

The eight-episode series, took viewers by storm as its swoon-worthy storyline followed a blossoming romance between Charlie Spring (played by Joe Locke) and Nick Nelson (Kit Connor).

As Heartstopper is the onscreen adaptation of Alice Oseman’s webcomic of the same name, the drama had fans emotionally gripped as the relationship blossomed in unexpected ways.

The series was also widely praised for its positive representation of LGBTQ+ characters, and thankfully for fans, Heartstopper will return for a second season in August.

Ahead of its release, Yasmine, who starred as Elle Argent, opened up about the “mind-blowing” response to season one.

Reflecting on production after the show’s success and overwhelmingly positive reception, the actress revealed: “It’s been amazing,” but admitted feeling the “pressure.”

Finney told Cosmopolitan UK: “There was definitely a pressure because season one did so well. We wanted to give season two all we had.”

Heartstopper had a global impact and instantly attracted a growing fanbase of those who resonated with the beloved characters.

Many fans also shared how the story provided hope as they watched the youthful LGBTQ+ characters live with freedom of expression.

Finney revealed she was taken aback by the response and critical acclaim, saying: “I didn’t realise how big Heartstopper was going to be.

“When I got cast as Elle aged 17, I was just happy to play this amazing trans girl who’s living authentically.

“I was still figuring out who I was, so it was mind-blowing to see the response to Elle.”

The 19-year-old continued: “Who I am is always going to be something that people want to talk about, but individuals should never be seen as a political playground.

“What’s nice about Elle is she’s so natural, confident, happy and real. She’ll always be my hero,” she added.

Finney has also been open with fans on social media, as she regularly shares her experience about living as a trans woman.

She also paid a touching tribute to her character on Instagram writing: “You have genuinely changed my life & inspired me to be my most authentic self.”

“I wish I had you when I was growing up.”

The full interview, conducted by Munroe Bergdorf, can be read in the Aug/Sept issue of Cosmopolitan UK, on sale from 25th July
