Steph McGovern was joined by guests Nabil Abdulrashid, Carol Vorderman, Ian Hislop and Paul Merton on Friday’s Have I Got News For You.

They were quick to discuss Phillip Schofield’s decision to quit This Morning and his former colleague Eamonn Holmes’ reaction to his resignation.

In a clip from Monday’s instalment of GB News shown to BBC viewers, Eamonn claimed Phillip “was sacked” from This Morning, which ITV have since denied, with an ITV spokesperson telling Express.co.uk: “Phillip Schofield’s decision to step down from This Morning was (as his statement made clear) a decision agreed between Phillip and ITV.”

However, since Have I Got News For You was recorded, Phillip has also released a statement confirming he had an affair with a younger This Morning colleague.

It left Have I Got News For You viewers feeling the episode was “already out of date”.

Taking to Twitter, @Kalmsivi said: “It’s obvious that #HIGNFY missed the fact that Schofield has admitted lying about the circumstances of his ‘scandal’ – this would have been far more explosive if it had been filmed just a few hours later.” (sic)

Mark added: “#Hignfy And it’s gotten worse for him since this was recorded. Phillip Schofield is beginning to look like another protected celebrity who’s been hiding a lot of sordid stuff.”

Danny penned: “It ain’t over for you yet Philip Schofield, what timing for this to pop up on #hignfy.”

Oliva King remarked: “#HIGNFY obviously pre-recorded… Out of date already.”

Jonathan commented: “Must be really annoying for the production team at #HIGNFY to record a show and then events overtake them.”

Phillip released a statement to Daily Mail on Friday (May 26) admitting he had an affair with a much younger male colleague on This Morning.

He said: “The first thing I want to say is: I am deeply sorry for having lied to them, and to many others about a relationship that I had with someone working on This Morning.

“I did have a consensual on-off relationship with a younger male colleague at This Morning.

“Contrary to speculation, whilst I met the man when he was a teenager and was asked to help him to get into television, it was only after he started to work on the show that it became more than just a friendship. That relationship was unwise, but not illegal. It is now over.”

Phillip also said he has stepped down from the British Soap Awards and is “resigning from ITV with immediate effect”.

Have I Got News For You airs on Fridays at 9pm on BBC One.
