Coming off a big win at Sunday’s Academy Awards for Best Animated Feature, director Guillermo del Toro is eyeing the cast for his next feature, a remake of the classic horror movie Frankenstein. Del Toro has been trying to make both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein for years, but both productions kept getting put off for one reason or another.

Deadline is reporting that del Toro has eyes on Andrew Garfield, Mia Goth, and Oscar Isaac for the production, which would also be for Netflix. Goth is preparing for the third movie in her Pearl trilogy after recently becoming a huge name in the horror movie genre.

It’s uncertain who would play who in the production, but it’s hinted that Goth would be Dr. Frankenstein’s love interest, possibly Elizabeth Lavenza, Victor Frankenstein’s adopted sister and eventual wife.

Back in 2019, del Toro said he wasn’t sure if the remake would ever come to fruition, but loved both movies so much. “I had an idea to do Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein, but I don’t think it’s going to happen…I really believe that the movies I do, most of the time, I do them because the premise is so absolutely bonkers.”

The 1931 Universal adaptation of Frankenstein is one of the most famous movies of all time and the essential imagery of the Monster. Frankenstein became a pop culture icon in the same vein as Dracula, the Wolfman, the Bride, and the Creature of the Black Lagoon. The movie was remade off the heels of the success of Francis Ford Coppola’s adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula which starred Kenneth Branagh as Victor and Robert De Niro as the Monster in 1994. Branagh also directed the feature.
