Good Morning Britain hosts Ranvir Singh and Paul Brand slapped down Thangham Debbonaire during a tense exchange this morning. This comes after Labour called for Parliament to return early in order to tackle soaring energy bills. Ms Singh branded the latest move “pointless” while Mr Brand exposed it as a “stunt that won’t get you anywhere”.

Mr Brand also pointed out that Labour was not even original in its political stunts – after copying similar demands made by the Liberal Democrats and SNP a week earlier.

Ms Singh put Ms Debbonaire on the spot: “What point would there be in calling Parliament back early when the future PM won’t be in place?

“Anything that is decided, anything conversation that is had, could be thrown out of the window a week later.”

The shadow leader of the House of Commons said that Ofgem will be announcing the next price cap increase in a week and action was urgently needed.

Earlier this week, Labour this week unveiled a £29bn plan to freeze the cap at the current level of £1,971 for six months from October

Ms Debbonaire explained: “Families are worrying about it right now. People are facing the terrifying prospect of whether to heat or eat.

“If we recalled parliament, we could pass the necessary law changes and freeze those bills where they are and that would save households so much worry.

“That wouldn’t solve the entire problem but it would help households to budget and save them each £1,000 this winter.”

Mr Brand fired back, claiming it was “just a stunt” that Tories would never vote for.
