Gameloft is making a Mario Kart-style Disney racing game

Gameloft, makers of Disney Dreamlight Valley, announced a Disney kart racer in a similar vein as Mario Kart called Disney Speedstorm. Despite only just being announced, seemingly out of nowhere, Speedstorm is closer than it appears in the mirror. Gameloft is planning an early access launch for April 18, 2023, on PC, Switch, PS4 and PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S.

A swanky Disney Speedstorm trailer accompanied the announcement, teasing tracks inspired by Disney theme parks and, if one black-and-white course is anything to go by, perhaps drawing on classic animation as well.

Tracks seem faintly reminiscent of Mario Kart 8, with twisty, gravity-defying turns and multiple paths that may give you a speed advantage or may just chuck you into the abyss. Speedstorm seems to change things up when it comes to chaos on the course, though. Instead of items littered about the place, Disney Speedstorm gives its racers unique abilities, such as Donald Duck throwing a tantrum and wrecking nearby opponents.

Like Dreamlight Valley, Disney Speedstorm will be free-to-play with microtransactions – but only after exiting early access. If you want to play it in April, you’ll need to purchase one of Gameloft’s Founders Packs, which start at $29.99 and include new characters, costumes, and in-game currency. It’s not clear just yet whether you’ll have to buy new racers after early access starts or if you can unlock them for free with in-game currency earned through challenges.
