Future Witcher and Cyberpunk games will have multiplayer

Amid the absolute flood of new announcements, CD Projekt Red is making an old promise new again. Do you remember when the Polish developer was working on multiplayer for Cyberpunk 2077? The feature never made the launch, but the company mentioned it’ll happen eventually. Nearly two years down the line, and there’s still no word of multiplayer ever coming to Night City. However, CDPR hasn’t given up on the dream. The company has announced that “most of [its] new games,” such as the Cyberpunk sequel and new Witcher saga, will have multiplayer of some kind.

The announcement made today was brief, introducing the multiplayer push for the bevy of game projects discussed earlier today. There’s a new Witcher trilogy in the works, along with two other projects in the franchise. A sequel to Cyberpunk 2077 is also in development. Based on the announcement, multiplayer should arrive for all or at least most of these new games. We hope.

It’s hard to say what kind of multiplayer content is coming to the Cyberpunk and Witcher franchises. The company writes that the feature will “enrich the single-player experience,” but that doesn’t mean it’ll overshadow it. Like with The Elder Scrolls, The Witcher series and Cyberpunk 2077 work incredibly well as solo romps — and perhaps shine the more for it. However, many of us have surely dreamed of exploring the rolling green hills of Toussaint with a friend. But frankly, the modes may be far less involved.

Fancy of a game of online Gwent?

I imagine a multiplayer function of a new Witcher game to involve Gwent in some form. Being able to take a break from hunting monsters for cards against online opponents isn’t something outside the realm of possibility. Hell, a multiplayer card game for Cyberpunk may also be in the planning stages. Why not? I have doubts we’ll see a full-fledged co-op mode; likely, Cyberpunk will have something separate but entwined in the story, perhaps akin to Factions in The Last of Us.

Regardless, we have a long time to think about it and dream little dreams of slaying or hacking alongside a friend. The game projects announced today will not see light for quite a while.
