The latest PlayStation State of Play gave us another look at Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, set to be released on PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles on December 7, 2023. This time, we got to see a sneak peek at our Na’vi protagonist, who was abducted by the RDA and secluded from her world. Now, it is time to reconnect with her roots and learn the ways of the Na’vi.

An incredibly beautiful world…

Following our protagonist’s journey, we will get to see the beautiful flora and fauna of Pandora. That same world that she has been unable to connect with before. We share her journey, as we too also get to experience the world in her eyes with a great first-person perspective. We will get to see all the details across the world of Avatar. You even get to fly your tetrapteron, or Fkio as Na’vi calls them. To be honest with you, it is breathtaking, just like our good old Keanu Reeves would say, and be.

…with guns?

And while the truly beautiful and spectacular views of Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora were making me emotional – and my graphics card, nervous -, what threw me off a bit was the gunplay. While it does not look particularly polished or flawless from what we have seen so far, I don’t understand the need to make things first-person shooters.

Now, I do appreciate Ubisoft’s decision to make guns optional in Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora, allowing us to instead use our Na’vi weaponry. Now, story-wise, it makes sense that the protagonist is proficient in firearms due to her time with the RDA. However, if the protagonist desires to recover her heritage as a Na’vi, then naturally anything that resembles the brutality of her time spent with humans would make her feel repulsion, to say the least.

But anyway, at least we have the choice. Maybe it is my inner me wanting to fight a modern conflict with sticks and stones. Maybe I just want to be an Ewok and fight the empire with rocks like in Return of the Jedi. Overall, I am ready to experience the game. It looks like a great and engaging story set in a really beautiful Avatar world. Let us hope that the gunplay doesn’t ruin what could be a really deep adventure of self-discovery.
