There are three Merlin Trials hidden in the depths of the Forbidden Forest. Here’s how to find and solve them.
There are 95 Merlin Trials for you to complete as you explore the areas surrounding Hogwarts. Some will challenge your spell-casting speed whilst walking the cliffs of the southern shore, while others will put your wits to the test in the ominous Forbidden Forest.
In Hogwarts Legacy, the Forbidden Forest spans half of the northern region outside Hogwarts. The ancient trees create an ambiance of nighttime at all times of the day, and danger lurks around every corner. This guide will walk you through where to find every Merlin Trial in the Forbidden Forest, and escape unscathed.
Sinking Torches Trial
Near the middle of the Forbidden Forest, you’ll discover the Jackdaw’s Tomb floo flame. The first of the trials is located just east of the floo flame, up on an incline, tucked away behind some trees.
To complete this trial, you’ll need to light three torches before they sink into the water-soaked ground. Each of the torches sinks at a different speed, so you’ll have to light them in the right order. From the mallowsweet altar, you’ll find one torch to the west by the lake, one to the north, and one to the east behind spiderwebs. Light them in this order to complete the trial.
Moths To A Flame Trial
Just east of the West Forbidden Forest floo flame, you’ll find the next trial. When you arrive, the area will be surrounded by a handful of poachers. Take them out before you attempt the trial.
Surrounding the mallowsweet altar, you’ll find three pillars with green gems embedded into them. To solve this trial, you’ll need to find the clusters of glowing moths, and then cast Lumos to gather them around your wand and bring them to the pillars. You’ll find the first cluster across a bridge on the eastern side of the trial. The next cluster is behind some vines you can burn, on the south side of the trial. And the final one is behind some rubble you can destroy, on the western wall.
Graveyard Pillars Trial
The final trial can be found in the northeastern section of the Forbidden Forest, right on the border of North Ford Bog, inside a small graveyard. After starting the trial, you’ll see that there are eight pillars you’ll need to activate by standing on top of them.
This trial is designed to test your platforming abilities as you will need to jump from one pillar to the next, without touching the ground. While standing on the altar and facing the pillars, start by climbing the pillar on the bottom right. From here, you’ll need to walk forward and jump to the next pillar at the last second to clear the large gap. The next one is a shorter gap and can be reached by jumping without walking off the edge. The next pillar can be reached by walking off the current pillar and not jumping.
As you traverse the remaining pillars, they can all be reached by using one of these three approaches. With a bit of trial and error, you’ll reach the final pillar and complete the trial in no time.
