Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is an alternative-universe prequel spin-off title of the Final Fantasy franchise, developed by Koei Tecmo-owned developer Team Ninja. It takes an action-RPG approach, with players controlling the character Jack, although unlike Team Ninja’s other action-RPG series Nioh, the protagonist is accompanied by a party of four other characters. As well as party members, the game incorporates the job system from the earlier Final Fantasy titles, allowing players to customize Jack and his companions with a range of different abilities and play styles.

Despite being most well known for its own IP with Dead or Alive, Ninja Gaiden, and Nioh, Team Ninja has a history of collaborations with third-party game franchises with the likes of Metroid: Other M, Hyrule Warriors, and Fire Emblem Warriors under its belt. The team also developed Dissidia Final Fantasy NT, a fighting game spin-off released in 2015.

The game incorporated a darker, edgier tone that became the subject of a lot of jokes made by fans, with many noting that its writing felt like it belonged in the mid-2000s as opposed to the early 2020s. Both the writing and dated presentation were recurring points of criticism when it was released in March 2022, with review scores and fan reception spanning across the board. In terms of success, it’s currently one of the more mixed entries in the franchise, and its financial performance has remained unknown with publisher Square Enix not releasing its official sales data.
