Final Fantasy 7 fans disappointed over viral Rebirth Easter egg

A Final Fantasy 7 fan and writer of books based on the game’s mythology, shared what he believed to be an Easter egg for the upcoming second part of the story titled Rebirth on the title screen of the original remake.

M.J. Gallagher sent chills down the spines of his almost 7,000 followers on Twitter when he posted a video of him opening Final Fantasy 7 Remake on PS5. Behind Cloud’s iconic Buster Sword a new red circular aura was visible. The next installment in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake was announced just over a week ago on June 16, with an announcement trailer and a new red logo.

Gallagher tweeted with the video “Holy heck, and now this Rebirth color effect has been added to the title screen when you boot up Final Fantasy VII Remake.” While people in the comments were clearly excited about the change, many others booted up their copies to see the title screen unchanged. Rebirth currently has a vague release date listed only as “next winter”.

Gallagher questioned others on what time zone they were in, assuming that Square Enix would be implementing the change at midnight. After several people established that the red glow was not visible on their versions of the game, they questioned if the aura was a hoax. As such Gallagher attempted to verify his claims.

In order to confirm the change to his followers, Gallagher wanted to show a direct stream from his PS5 rather than recording the screen. “I’m sharing a direct PS5 upload to prove it’s not my monitor.” However, this would prove the exact opposite. The aura was in fact caused by damage to his TV, and not by anything developer Square Enix had added since the announcement of Rebirth.

Updating his followers Gallagher added “Folks, I’m so sorry. False alarm. Turns out my toddler has thrown a toy at my TV, both damaging the screen and sending the FFVII community into meltdown.” Just goes to show that you should aim to verify claims before whipping the Final Fantasy community into a fervor.
