Final Fantasy 16 DLC is unlikely, Yoshida says

Final Fantasy 16 DLC probably won’t happen, producer Naoki Yoshida says because the upcoming RPG tells a complete story.

“It’s a one-off game,” Yoshida told Game Informer. “We’re asking players to pay the full price for this experience, and so we want an experience that’s going to equal the amount of money that players are going to be paying and we want them to have satisfaction equal to what they paid or even more than that.”

That’s a different approach to pretty much every recent Final Fantasy game, which either ended up with a sequel or two like Final Fantasy 13 and FF7 Remake, or had its story spread across DLC and even a movie, as Final Fantasy 15 did. While FF15’s rocky development cycle likely prompted Square Enix to split its story, it seems like Final Fantasy 16 is in a much better position. The latest Final Fantasy 16 previews suggest the extra delays to polish the RPG paid off, much as Nintendo’s decision to delay Tears of the Kingdom did.

The prospect of DLC isn’t entirely out of the question, though. Yoshida said any further stories in Valisthea, whether it be DLC or a full expansion, will depend on how the characters and story resonate with fans.

“We have no idea if people are going to fall in love with Valisthea and fall in love with Clive’s story and want to see more of the world and more of its characters,” Yoshida said. “So while we always want to consider DLC or spinoffs or those types of things where you can learn more about the game, first we want to see if Valisthea and Clive are really things players around the world want to see more of and then make that decision.”
