In a recent interview developer Square Enix divulged that they don’t seem to have plans for a DLC or expansion at least for now.
One of the major releases happening next month, Final Fantasy 16 is the next entry in the long-running franchise. While each game isn’t a continuation of the last, in the past mainline titles have received DLCs. However, in an interview with the Creative Business Unit III, director Hiroshi Takai shared via Gameinformer, that the team are holding off on an expansion at least for now. Their plans involve getting the game out the front door and seeing what fans think of the world of Valisthea.
Producer Naoki Yoshida also chimed in confirming that they wanted to see how fans would react to Final Fantasy 16, before making a “decision” to move forward with a DLC or even a spinoff.
We have no idea if people are going to fall in love with Valisthea and fall in love with Clive’s story and want to see more of the world and more of its characters. So while we always want to consider DLC or spinoffs or those types of things where you can learn more about the game, first we want to see if Valisthea and Clive are really things players around the world want to see more of and then make that decision
Naoki Yoshida via an intereview with Gameinformer
In the past the remake Final Fantasy VII received DLCs, inviting players to learn more about characters such as Yuffie. Story-based DLCs often allow players to gain further details about the world and loveable characters within them.
It looks like if Final Fantasy 16 fans welcome Clive’s world with open arms, we could be seeing more of Valisthea. This entry is a much darker rendition, set to bring not only emotional damage but a story about sides vying for power. As each entry of FF usually begins a journey anew, sometimes it’s great to get a little more story to round out some plots or areas of the game of interest. It can also contain some content that doesn’t quite make it into the main game, but still adds to the universe created.
This time Clive will be able to not only fight in human form, but utilises an Eikon form as he is a Dominant. This is a departure from entries past, where characters could use summon moves. Eikon are much more powerful mythical being resembling mythical creatures, beasts or event deities. The combat sets to have fast action with a sidekick dog called Torgal who can be commanded instructions. As with all titles in the Final Fantasy universe you can expect returning OG creatures such as Chocobos and Moogles.
Game modes have also gotten a shake up. While there is a Story Mode, players will automatically equip Timely Accessories that can help ease the challenge of combat from the get go. Opting for Action Focused will mean not having these accessories from the beginning, and you can simply not use them later if you prefer. Expect to sink roughly 35 hours into the game’s main story.
Final Fantasy 16 will be coming to Playstation 5 on June 22nd.
