Starship Troopers: Extermination is a 12-player cooperative shooter based on the 1997 sci-fi movie. Developer Offworld Industries, best known for military sim Squad, has released a trailer announcing the game is planned to release on Steam early access in 2023.
Extermination plans to offer large-scale squad battles where the player and their party face off against the movie’s Arachnids. Each player is a member of the Deep Space Vanguard and can play as one of three classes – Assault, Support and Defence. You’ll be able to level your character through the class progression system.
Map-wise, Starship Troopers: Extermination will have one giant map with five unique zones, all taking place on the planet of Valaka. There’ll be some level of defence building as players can erect walls, lookout stations and more. The game will feature an extensive ping system that will aid players in communicating in hectic firefight situations.
There are five different types of Arachnids the player will face, each for a different zone. Tougher enemies will begin to swarm as the threat level of the mission increases. The enemies become bigger and more dangerous as the mission continues.
It would appear Starship Troopers: Extermination is the next in a line of games trying to capture the feeling of a large-scale planetary war. Offworld Industries wants to portray the frenetic, chaotic scene of a squad of veterans fighting off an overwhelming force. It’s evocative of D3 Publisher’s Earth Defense Force series of third-person shooters, and even Warhammer 40,000 Darktide.
Offworld Industries began as a group of game modders creating a spiritual successor to the Project Reality mod for Battlefield 2. That project became Squad, the 2015 military simulation game. Earlier this year, Offworld received an investment from Tencent which now owns a minority stake in the studio.
