Emmerdale star Mark Charnock, who plays Marlon Dingle in the ITV soap, paid tribute to his co-star Dominic Brunt on the red carpet ahead of the British Soap Awards.

The pair are up for Best On-Screen Partnership and Mark told Express.co.uk he admired Dominic’s dedication to Paddy’s harrowing depression storyline.

He said: “I think he has been extraordinary, it’s a really hard story that the show has told really well.

“He really dug into it and he has been really working with the charities and seeing it close up, he has obviously had to go somewhere very dark to get that out.

“I just love his performance, I have always thought he’s been brilliant. I just think he has been extraordinary.”

Actor Dominic has also been working on horror films away from the soap and Mark praised the star for juggling so much.

“I don’t know how he does it,” he said. “I think it might be like Doctor Who or something where he has broken the space-time continuum somehow.”

On how it feels to be nominated with his co-star, he said: “We have been so close, we have been working together for so long.

We are in each other’s abiding marriage really, it’s nice to be nominated. It’s lovely.”

Dominic was unable to attend the red carpet event but he has previously spoken out about his tragic storyline.

He revealed he had to “shake off” Paddy’s depression after each day of filming.

He told the Mail Online he received good support and prioritised getting enough sleep to ensure Paddy’s depression was “shaken off almost immediately.”

Dominic added: “I couldn’t let myself even open a little door to the Black dogs that these people experience.”

The actor worked with producers and mental health charities The Samaritans and Andy’s Man Club to tackle the storyline sensitively.

He said he aimed to “normalise talking” about mental health, particularly in men who sometimes struggle to open up.
