The Embracer Group has announced its plans to archive historical games. On a new website dedicated to the Embracer Games Archive, the company states: “We are building an archive to embrace the history of games.”

According to the website, there are currently 50,000 games, consoles, and accessories in the archive in Karlstad, Sweden. The next phase of the archive’s plans is to build a database and to start cataloging its collection this year. Future plans for the archives include collaboration with archival initiatives and museums, as well as researchers and journalists.

In the long term, the Embracer Games Archive hopes to exhibit parts of its collection locally, as well as through satellite exhibitions at other locations.

Embracer Games Archive is also allowing contributions. The company is focused on buying “large complete unique collections (both hardware and software) of formats we are missing.”

Alongside its archival initiative, Embracer Group has also been on a buying-spree for game studios and IP. Most recently, the company announced the acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Square Enix Montreal, and Eidos Montreal from Square Enix.

Alongside the studios themselves, the acquisition also includes several IP, including Marvel’s Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy, as well as Deus Ex, Tomb Raider, Legacy of Kain, and Thief. The company stated in a recent quarterly fiscal briefing that alongside sequels, these franchises will also get remakes, remasters, and spinoffs.
