Welcome, adventurer as the High Isle expansion is almost amongst us! The last time we visited Tamriel, the land of The Elder Scrolls Online, was when actor Billy Boyd explained to us some of the basics of Tales of Tributes.
People need a place to relax, chum. The ancient anchor’s fine for sailors on shore leave. But people looking for a really good time always come here. Go out and win some games, my friend. It really is true that experience is the greatest teacher, especially when it comes to Tales of Tribute. I’ll be rooting for you the entire way – Brahgas, portrayed by Boyd
Tales of Tribute is a fast-paced collectible card game set in the Elder Scrolls Online universe. In this minigame, players can face off against NPCs or other players themselves in order to find out who’s the master of the tavern.
This time we take a closer look at the expansion’s four starter Patrons (or themes in other CCGs) and see what they’re about.
The Patrons of the Tales
Everyone who wishes to succeed in their Elder Scrolls Online card game career must be familiar with the four starting patrons. Each of these has unique styles that can complement each other. Knowing which cards of each patron work well with another will be of utmost importance as you need to select two to do battle.
Duke of Crows
The Duke of Crows is a curious creature and an even more curious Patron. Coming from the pocket realm of the Crow’s Wood, the Duke lords over his murder called The Blackfeather Court. As each of the crows in his court scheme and plot, they also collect coins and “shinies” to further fill their coffers.
As such, the theme of the Duke of Crows Patron is that of gaining more treasures, but in the case of the card game, more cards. The Duke of Crows is even so powerful that he can even draw his entire deck at the peak of his strength. Obtaining card advantage over your foes is always something to strive for in card games, as it minimizes randomness of the draw and gives you more options at a time.
Lastly, the Duke’s Patron Ability allows the player to gain a large spike of power in a small amount of time, but at a cost.
Grandmaster Delmene Hlaalu
Our next Patron is one of the previous leaders of House Hlaalu, Delmene Hlaalu. House Hlaalu is one of the Three Great Houses of Morrowind, whose seat of power is in Ald’ruhn, Vvardenfell. This Great House is one full of merchants and traders, and as such, they are also sharp with their tongues.
The Grandmaster excels at obtaining goods and gold. Because of this, they are able to purchase more powerful cards from the Tavern. Delmene Hlaalu’s Patron Ability allows the player to generate large amounts of wealth and thus afford extremely pricey cards from the Tavern. Cards can also be traded for Prestige.
Saint Pelin
Holy Saint Pelin protected the lands from vampires in the olden days. Some even consider this a make-believe story to frighten their children. However, some take up the mantle in Pelin’s name to represent the ideals that he stood for, to protect the weak, and shield the needy.
Followers of the Patron Saint Pelin are adept at creating creatures with high power and defensive abilities like taunt into play. His warriors are able to hold the line between any incoming foe, protecting the player with utmost might.
Saint Pelin’s Patron Ability allows him to heal his agents. Players can then immediately put a card that’s been placed on cooldown on top of the deck which means that they will get that card on the next turn. This will reduce the unpredictability of the draw and give players a guaranteed option in the upcoming turn.
Psijic Loremaster Celarus
Our final initial Patron is the Psijic Loremaster Celarius. The Psijic Order is a mysterious and forgotten order that has just recently resurfaced in the land of Tamriel, specifically in Summerset.
Celarius lets players sift through their deck, much like how Scry works in Magic the Gathering. This essentially lets players pick and choose which cards they will draw, and in what order.
Much like the Blue color in MtG, the Psijic Order can also disrupt the enemy’s plays. Celarius can even knock enemy agents unconscious or ensure that powerful ones only survive for a single turn.
