In addition to having a spectacular open world, Elden Ring also features several underground areas that are just as impressive. But while some underground areas like Siofra River or Nokstella, Eternal City, are an absolute pleasure to explore, others are downright frustrating and confusing. The Leyndell Catacombs fall into the second category.

The Leyndell Catacombs are an optional area; however, you’ll definitely want to explore them anyway because you can find some pretty good rewards inside. Among other things, you’ll find two talismans hidden within, including the Lord of Blood’s Exultation.

How To Reach The Leyndell Catacombs

Just in case the name didn’t already give it away, the Leyndell Catacombs can be found beneath Leyndell, Royal City. It’s important to note, however, that the area can still be accessed even after Leyndell becomes the Ashen Capital, so feel free to visit it at any time during your playthrough. To access the catacombs, you’ll first need to delve into the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds via the well located close to the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace.

Make your way through the sewers until you reach the Underground Roadside Site of Grace. As you leave the room, look to the northeast to find a ladder that will take you deeper into the sewers. Once you’re in the next area, carefully make your way to the bottom, where you’ll encounter two Giant Crayfish. After you kill the first one, look to the southeast, and you’ll be able to spot the entrance to the catacombs. Be wary of the second Giant Crayfish waiting to ambush you just in front of the entrance. Turn right after you pass through the entrance to unlock the Leyndell Catacombs Site of Grace.

The Leyndell Catacombs are one of the most confusing dungeons in Elden Ring, but navigating them is actually pretty easy once you understand the layout. The catacombs are comprised of three sections with nearly identical rooms that will make you feel like you’re constantly running around in circles. In a sense, you are, but don’t worry about getting lost because we’ll guide you through the whole thing down below.

Leyndell catacombs coffin room

Head down the first corridor and past the sealed gate to reach a room with a coffin where you’ll be attacked by a few enemies from above. Continue up the stairs, where you’ll find a room with three enemies and a corpse holding a Grave Gloveworth (6). Turn left as you leave the room and proceed through the next section until you reach a fire trap. Try to disable it from afar using Margit’s Shackle or a ranged weapon if you can. Once the trap is disabled, jump on it to activate it again. On the upper level, you’ll find a room with an Omen guarding the Crucible Scale Talisman.

Turn left after you leave the trap room and head up the stairs to reach the second floor. Make your way up the next flight of stairs but be wary of the Omen patrolling the upper area. Dispatch the enemy and grab the Grave Gloveworth (9) as you make your way to the next area. Or is it the same area? Well, once you reach the end of the corridor, you’ll find yourself overlooking the same coffin room where you were attacked from above earlier. This looks like a dead end since jumping down will seemingly take you back to the Site of Grace, but that’s not the case. This is just the start of a loop, and jumping down will take you to the second section of Leyndell Catacombs.

As soon as you jump down, enemies will rise from the water and start attacking you. Do away with them and grab the Grave Gloveworth (8) from the room before proceeding down the northwest corridor. At the end of the corridor, you’ll find what seems to be the boss room; only the door is already open, and there’s no boss inside. Instead, there are two Omens in this room, along with a Grave Gloveworth (8) and a Gold Rune (11). Since the loot isn’t all that great, you can skip this room entirely if you want and return to the coffin room, where you’ll find some stairs that will take you to an area identical to the one where you encountered the fire trap earlier.

Move toward the trap but don’t jump on the pillar just yet. Instead, take the right corridor first and grab the Grave Gloveworth (8) before heading upstairs to find an Omen that’s apparently mourning the other Omen you killed earlier in the same place. However, this is just another trick, as that’s an entirely different corpse. Kill the Omen and make your way toward the end of the corridor to find yourself overlooking the coffin room yet again. But you guessed it; it’s not really the same room. Unlike the other two, this third iteration only has one exit, so go ahead and take it. You’re now in the third section of Leyndell Catacombs.

Proceed up the stairs and go inside the room at the end of the corridor to find some enemies and a Grave Gloveworth (8). Leave the room and turn left to make your way to the area with the fire trap while grabbing another Grave Gloveworth (8) along the way. There’s a Grave Gloveworth (9) in the room the trap was supposed to be in, but otherwise, the room is now empty. Mostly. As soon as you step foot inside, an Omen will ambush you from above, so prepare accordingly. Leave the room and turn left to find a corridor leading to a window you can jump through to return to the second section of the dungeon.

Leyndell Catacombs lever

Turn around and go down the stairs to reach a familiar junction. Turn right and step onto the fire trap pillar to progress to the next area. Upstairs, you’ll find a room identical to the one where you found the Crucible Scale Talisman. The room looks empty from a distance, but if you go inside, you’ll find a corridor and an Imp at the end of it. You’ll find another Imp just behind it. Kill both Imps and head downstairs where you’ll find a ladder at the far end of the room. Go down the ladder and proceed down the corridor that leads you to the lever that opens the boss room. You’ll also find a Sacramental Bud next to it.

With the door finally open, you can now challenge Esgar, Priest of Blood, the boss of Leyndell Catacombs. The boss itself is a bit of a pushover, but you’ll also have to deal with two dogs while fighting Esgar, so expect things to get a bit hectic. Make sure to kill the dogs before taking on Esgar. Once Esgar is dead, you’ll be rewarded with the Lord of Blood’s Exaltation talisman.

By this point, you’ve cleared the dungeon, but you can grab one more talisman on your way up. Go back to the Leyndell Catacombs bonfire but instead of returning to the room with the Giant Crayfish, turn right and step on the elevator. You’ll find some spirits upstairs that respawn every time you kill them, so don’t even bother attacking them. As soon as you reach the upper level, head right and run past the spirits to find a Spirit-Called Snail and a corpse next to it holding the Halidrake Talisman +1. Kill the snail to prevent the spirits from bothering you anymore, and continue upstairs to open a shortcut that will take you back to the Subterranean Shunning-Grounds.
