EA Is breaking away from FIFA, introducing its own series EA Sports FC

Publisher Electronic Arts have announced that it will be rebranding its FIFA series as of next year. It is replacing the existing EA Sports FIFA name with EA Sports FC. This change will mark the first installment in the popular football simulation series to not use the FIFA branding since its debut in 1993.

The game itself will effectively just be another FIFA game in all but name. The series’ core game modes like Ultimate Team, Career Mode, Pro Clubs, and Volta will all still be present. Also, FIFA‘s impressive license pool of over 19,000 players, 700 teams, 30 leagues, and 100 stadiums isn’t going anywhere.

EA doesn’t provide any official explanation as to why the name change is happening. Although, given the money involved with licensing deals of this scale, it’s fair to assume that finances are its main motive. Perhaps EA no longer believes that the FIFA brand brings enough with it to justify the cost.

Before the transition to EA Sports FC, the publisher has promised fans one last FIFA game. It describes this next FIFA as its “most expansive game ever,” with “more features, game modes, World Cup content, clubs, leagues, competitions, and players than any FIFA title before.”

More information about EA Sports FC will follow in Summer 2023. As for this year’s FIFA, an announcement can be expected sometime this Summer with further details being revealed leading up to its launch. An official release date hasn’t been announced, but it’ll probably be sometime in late September.

The next-gen experience

Whenever sports games are mentioned PC gamers usually have one question to ask. Will we be getting the next-gen version? Last year FIFA, Madden, and NBA 2K were all released on PC using the last-gen ports. Given that the PC platform has the best hardware gaming has to offer, it comes across as confusing, even if the publishers involved have their reasoning. Whether this year’s FIFA will follow that same path is to be seen.
