Developers of Alone in the Dark Suffer Layoffs

Articles about layoffs, staff cuts, or restructuring within major companies as well as smaller ones are becoming increasingly common. This time, the news came from the development studio behind the new version of Alone in the Dark, Pieces Interactive, which experienced downsizing within its team.

A Wave of Layoffs Just One Month After the Release

According to reports, the company began laying off members of its staff just over a month after the release of this reinterpretation of the 1992 classic. Pieces Interactive is part of Embracer Group, the company that recently announced its division into three parts: Asmodee Group, Coffee Stain & Friends, and Middle-earth Enterprises & Friends.

It was the Insider-Gaming portal that echoed statements made by a dismissed employee of Pieces Interactive. Quality control analyst Helena Hansen said the following: “I have been fired. I will make a better post with all my links when the feelings calm down, but phew. My heart is broken for me and my colleagues right now.”

So far, only Hansen has confirmed the layoffs, but her message makes it clear that she has not been the only one to lose her job at Pieces Interactive. For now, neither Pieces Interactive nor THQ Nordic have made any statements on the matter, so we will have to wait to find out the exact extent of this new wave of layoffs hitting the video game industry, an industry that has been severely affected in the last couple of years.

Furthermore, the decision was made to close studios such as Deep Silver Volition, Campfire Cabal, Free Radical Design, and lay off around 1400 employees. A restructuring that had a profound impact on many people’s jobs and seems to have not yet come to an end.

Regarding this reboot of Alone in the Dark, the title failed to generate a positive reception from critics. On the other hand, the game’s sales did not meet the company’s expectations, despite featuring actor David Harbour (Stranger Things) as the main character for greater media exposure. The production is the seventh installment in the franchise and is available for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
