Bungie Studios is now allowing Destiny 2 players to earn cosmetics no longer unlockable via core gameplay.

In the run-up to the game’s newest expansion, Lightfall, Bungie is releasing articles regarding various upcoming changes which will accompany it. Today it published a post regarding the economy changes Lightfall will bring.

The standout feature is the inclusion of legacy gear focusing. This will allow players to earn old gear items from retired seasons, with which they can transmogrify their current appearance. Considering Destiny 2 is approaching its 20th season, there is a lot of potential growth for this system, allowing newer players to display vintage looks. This move will eliminate a lot of fear of missing out inherent to the live service model Destiny 2 offers, and it may be appreciated by players who did not have the time previously to earn a particular piece of armor. Bungie has announced weapons and armor from the following sets will become available for focusing:

  • Crucible
  • Vanguard (including Nightfall weapons)
  • Gambit
  • Iron Banner
  • Trials of Osiris

The cost Bungie will exact from players to return to the past is their time in the present. Legacy armor focusing will require an investment of:

  • 3 Crucible Engrams
  • 50 Legendary Shards
  • 10,000 Glimmer

There will also be a reduced cost for pieces of legacy armor previously obtained. Nightfall, Iron Banner, and Trials of Osiris will require additional resources:

  • 7 Engrams from their respective seasons
  • 100 Legendary Shards
  • 100,000 Glimmer

This system comes in the wake of changes made to Blue Engrams and is consistent with Bungie’s seeming desire to make life easier for players and provide new avenues for progression and gameplay. Additionally, Ada-1 will now be selling three legacy armor shaders on a rotating basis at 10,000 Glimmer a pop.

The emphasis on legacy content will give players yet more things to do and items to work towards. Tying them together with current game progress may turn out to be the best move to encourage players to jump in, rather than dangling items in front of players for a limited time to encourage them to buy in and binge the game. This approach may prove to be healthier for the community and population figures of Destiny 2 in the long run. Such a change may help it save face with recent claims of players losing their character progress, and resulting server downtime.

As the former Halo developer’s past franchise struggles amidst layoffs and leadership struggles, Bungie seems keen to provide for its current player base and is full steam ahead for Lightfall.
