Destiny 2: Threadrunner Hunter Build Guide

0

With the release of Destiny 2’s Lightfall expansion, players have finally gotten their hands on the new Darkness Subclass, Strand. Once again, Bungie is going deeper into powers from the Darkness, and players are racing to make the best builds possible, and we have two builds here for you today that Threadrunners will love. These builds will have you either suspending enemies forever while giving yourself insane damage resistance, or spawning Threadlings constantly, while having very high uptime on Strand debuffs, as well as your Super.

Strand is fully unlocked upon completing the Lightfall campaign. You get tastes of the subclass during the story, but only upon beating the campaign and interacting with the Pouka Pond on Neomuna do you truly get your hands on the subclass. Defeating enemies with Strand will drop Strand Meditations, which you can use to unlock Fragments, Aspects, and Grenades.

Crafting Your Threadrunner Build

Builds have a number of moving parts; these include Aspects, Fragments, Exotic Armor, Mods, and Weapons. There are no weapon requirements for either build here, but some will be better than others.

Threadrunner Aspects

Aspect

Effect

Ensnaring Slam

Activate your air move to consume your class ability energy and dive to the ground, suspending all nearby targets on impact. Using this ability extends class ability cooldown time. 2 Fragment Slots.

Widow’s Silk

You have an additional grenade charge. Your grapple creates a Grapple Tangle at the grapple point. 2 Fragment Slots.

Given that only two Aspects are accessible right now, it makes sense to use both of them in our builds. Future Seasons will contain more Aspects. However, their current effects are unknown. The two Aspects used are relatively simple, but with the proper setup, they become some of the most essential parts of our builds.

Strand Fragments

Strand has plenty of amazing Fragments to choose from, each providing a different effect and being core parts of many builds. However, we will only focus on the best few for our builds here.

Fragment

Effect

Thread of Generation

Dealing damage generates grenade energy. -10 Discipline

Thread of Isolation

Landing rapid precision hits emits a severing burst from the target

Thread of Warding

Picking up an Orb of Power grants Woven Mail. -10 Resilience

Thread of Wisdom

Defeating suspended targets with precision final blows creates an Orb of Power

Thread of Continuity

Suspend, unravel, and sever effects applied to targets have increased duration. +10 Strength

Thread of Evolution

Threadlings travel farther and deal additional damage. +10 Intellect

Thread of Rebirth

Strand weapon final blows have a chance to create a Threadling

Fragments are arguably the most important parts of every build. They provide potent effects while sometimes granting bonus stats.

Exotic Armor

Inspecting the Sixth Coyote Hunter Exotic

Strand brought a bit of a forgotten armor piece back into the spotlight, namely The Sixth Coyote. Star-Eater Scales is also amazing with Threadrunner, and given how strong Silkstrike and Suspend are, it makes sense for our builds to focus on these two parts of the Threadrunner kit.

  • The Sixth Coyote: This exotic Chest piece will give you a second dodge charge, and when combined with Ensnaring Slam, you can chain your suspending dives back to back
  • Radiant Dance Machines: These exotic Boots grant you increased super regeneration from gathering orbs

Weapon Mods

Mods were changed to function off of Orbs of Power in Destiny 2: Lightfall, causing drastic changes to many builds. These builds, of course, did not exist before Lightfall, but they will still have to follow this new system. Here are some of the strongest mods that will feature in our builds.

  • Siphon Mods
  • Ashes to Assets
  • Grenade Kickstart
  • Elemental Surges
  • Stacks on Stacks

Mods are key to a potent build, so having the best setup is important for an optimal build.

Stasis Revenant Competition

Destiny 2 Hidden Menu View of the Stasis Hunter Subclass Screen

Strand will mainly find its competition in the Stasis Revenant Hunter subclass. Both focus on controlling the battlefield and keeping enemies under crowd control effects. While Revenant is stronger in comparison to the other Stasis subclasses than Threadrunner is to Broodweaver and Berserker, Strand, on the whole, is often seen as better than Stasis. Suspending enemies more often than not is better than freezing them, as enemies take reduced while frozen. Strand also provides a number of solid buffs — such as Unraveling Rounds and Woven Mail — which are both incredibly strong in their own ways.

Threadrunner Build: Sixth Coyote Suspending

Enemies Suspended With Strand In Destiny 2

  • Stats: Resilience, Discipline, and Mobility
  • Aspects: Ensnaring Slam and Widow’s Silk
  • Fragments: Thread of Continuity, Thread of Warding, Thread of Wisdom, and Thread of Generation
  • Weapon Choices: Osteo Striga, Demolitionist Weapons, or if you want to mix it up, try the very first Strand Exotic, Final Warning
  • Abilities: Shackle Grenade and Marksman’s Dodge

This first build uses The Sixth Coyote’s double dodge charge to the max and optimizes the regeneration of our suspending abilities which are the Shackle Grenade and Ensnaring Slam.

With two grenade charges from Widow’s Silk and two Ensnaring Slam charges from Sixth Coyote, you have four different avenues to suspending targets. When paired with Thread of Continuity, each individual source of suspension will last up to 8 seconds, allowing for over half a minute of suspension time in a single ability cycle of 2 grenades and 2 dodges. Realistically, with high enough mobility, you will be able to chain 5 as you will have another slam ready to go.

Armor Piece

Mods

Helmet

Siphon Mods matching your weapons

Arms

3x Grenade Kickstart

Chest

Resistance Mods matching your enemy’s damage

Legs

Stacks on Stacks, Innervation, and Recuperation

Cloak

2x Bomber and Distribution

Aim to fit stat mods in wherever possible to reach maximum Resilience, Discipline, and Mobility, in that order of priority.

Collecting Orbs of Power will grant you stacks of Armor Charge, and upon throwing your Shackle Grenade, you will get energy back depending on your stacks consumed. With the two sources of generating Orbs, the Siphon Mods and Thread of Wisdom, you will be generating Orbs constantly. This, on top of the health you will receive from Recuperation and the damage resistance from Thread of Warding, makes this build one for the ages.

Threadrunner Build: Star-Eater Threadlings

Destiny 2 Ligtfall Trailer Shows Off Environments Of Neomuna

  • Stats: Resilience, Discipline, and Mobility
  • Aspects: Ensnaring Slam and Widow’s Silk
  • Fragments: Thread of Generation, Thread of Evolution, Thread of Rebirth, and Thread of Isolation
  • Weapon Choices: Strand Weapons (The Immortal and Rufus’s Fury are excellent), Bad Juju, Demolitionist Weapons
  • Abilities: Threadling Grenade and Marksman’s Dodge

You maybe thought Threadlings were just for Warlocks, but absolutely not. Threadlings are super fun and a strong pick on every class, especially Hunter. Combining this build with a Demolitionist + Hatchling Rufus’s Fury allows you to spam Threadling Grenades constantly as you watch your super bar rocket up.

Armor Piece

Mods

Helmet

2x Ashes to Assets and a matching Siphon Mod

Arms

1x Grenade Kickstart and 2x Firepower

Chest

Resistance Mods matching your enemy’s damage.

Legs

2x Innervation and Recuperation

Cloak

2x Bomber and Distribution

Once again, try to fit stat mods in wherever possible to reach maximum Resilience, Discipline, and Mobility, in that order of priority.

With these mods, the Threadlings from Threadling Grenade will generate Orbs of Power, which will help get your Super faster. Getting multi-kills with your weapon of choice will also drop and Orb, and with Grenade Kickstart, Innervation, Bomber, and Thread of Generation, you will always have a Threadling Grenade ready to go. Once you charge your Super, stack Feast of Light to x4 and destroy any enemy in your way.

Between these two builds, Threadrunners have two competitive options for most content in the game. Sixth Coyote may be more viable in some harder Grandmaster content, but nothing is as fun as seeing your Threadlings mow everything down. It is important to remember, though, that these Mods and Fragments can be experimented with to your preference.
