Destiny 2 Luna’s Howl Guide – How To Get It, Curated Roll, And God Roll

The last of Destiny 2: Into the Light’s Brave arsenal is finally unlocked, bringing two last fan-favorite weapons back into players’ hands. Of all of them, Luna’s Howl might be the most prestigious, so it makes sense that it was left for last. The revised hand cannon could be almost as ravenous a predator of the Crucible as the original version, which was sunset way back with the Beyond Light expansion.

Like the other Brave arsenal weapons, you’ll need to knock down a quest in order to unlock the ability to farm Luna’s Howl reliably in Onslaught. It doesn’t take much work, though, especially if you’ve got an hour or two to spend clearing waves of enemies. Luna’s Howl has some pretty phenomenal potential rolls, though, making it a great gun to farm to take into Iron Banner and the Crucible. Here’s everything you need to know about Luna’s Howl, including which god rolls to chase.

How To Unlock Luna’s Howl

As with the other weapons in the Brave arsenal released in Into the Light, you can get Luna’s Howl by completing quests in the Hall of Champions and taking part in the new Onslaught activity. You’ll first need to complete the Feats of Strength quest with Lord Shaxx in order to unlock the full potential of the Hall of Champions. That also means knocking out the first weapon-specific quest you can pick up from Shaxx’s right-hand bot, Arcite 99-40, called Stranger Danger.

With Feats of Strength done, you’re now able to pick up additional weapon quests from Arcite that cover all the available Brave arsenal weapons. This week unlocks the last of them (alongside Blast Furnace), making the Luna’s Howl quest available to grab immediately.

Complete Arcite’s Howl at the Moon quest will unlock Luna’s Howl. Like the other weapon quests, it has two different means of completing it:

  • Defeat enemies with precision damage using a hand cannon anywhere in the system, with bonus progress for rapid final blows in Onslaught, or:
  • Defeat 50 Guardians using a hand cannon.

Any hand cannon will do for these steps, although the fastest way to unlock Luna’s Howl is probably doing a few rounds of Onslaught–we knocked out the precision kill requirement in about 15 waves.

Once you’ve completed the quest, you can visit the holographic statue of Lord Shaxx that’s holding the gun to “attune” it. When you attune a weapon, you’ll receive it as a random reward from Onslaught activities and Trophies of Bravery chests much more often than normal. Use attunement to farm Onslaught and chase the rolls you want the most.

You’ll also get Bungie’s curated version of Luna’s Howl, which includes the perks Eye of the Storm and a reworked version of Magnificent Howl, the signature perk of the original version of this gun. That’s a pretty solid version of Luna’s Howl you can take right into the Crucible, if you’re so inclined.

Luna’s Howl

Luna’s Howl Curated Perks

  • Barrel: Smallbore
  • Magazine: Ricochet Rounds
  • First Column: Eye of the Storm
    • This weapon becomes more accurate and boosts handling as your health gets lower
  • Second Column: Magnificent Howl
    • The number of precision final blows before reloading affects the total rounds granted with increased range and damage. Precision final blows with Magnificent Howl active extend the effect for additional rounds.
  • Origin Perk: Indomitability
    • Kills with this weapon provide grenade energy if you’re using a Light subclass, or melee energy if you’re using a Dark subclass

Luna’s Howl God Rolls

With its re-release in the Brave arsenal, Luna’s Howl has seen some major changes to its available perks. It also fires faster than the original, which was a 180 RPM hand cannon–this one is a 140 RPM. Though Bungie has adjusted its signature perk, Magnificent Howl, to be a little less overpowered in the Crucible, it’s still an impressive PvP weapon. With Magnificent Howl active, the increase in damage and range you’ll receive can kill opponents in two quick headshots, making this thing exceedingly lethal against other players if you’re accurate and plan accordingly.

As for PvE, Luna’s Howl wasn’t originally conceived as a gun to take down rank-and-file aliens. That said, the new perk pool has some pretty good options, like Incandescent and Heal Clip, that make it a very viable choice.

Luna’s Howl PvP God Roll

  • Barrel: Hammer-Forged Rifling
  • Magazine: Ricochet Rounds
    • Rounds ricochet off hard surfaces
    • +5 Range, +10 Stability
  • First Perk: Heal Clip / Slideshot
    • Heal Clip: Reloading after a final blow grants Cure to you and nearby allies
    • Slideshot: Sliding partially reloads this weapon’s magazine and temporarily boosts range and stability
  • Second Perk: Magnificent Howl / Desperate Measures
    • Magnificent Howl: The number of precision final blows before reloading affects the total rounds granted with increased range and damage. Precision final blows with Magnificent Howl active extend the effect for additional rounds.
    • Desperate Measures: Weapon final blows grant bonus damage. Melee and grenade final blows grant a larger bonus that can stack.
  • Masterwork: Range

When it comes to the barrel, magazine, and Masterwork for Luna’s Howl, you want to squeeze out as much range as you can get, minimizing damage fall-off and allowing you to win fights from as far away as possible. For its perks, you have some choices based on how you play and what will serve you best. Magnificent Howl and Heal Clip both reward you for scoring kills and reloading afterward, with Heal Clip’s blast of Cure potentially making it easier for you to survive your next fight, hopefully with Magnificent Howl rounds now in your magazine. Alternatively, Slideshot gives you a way of boosting your shots so you’re more likely to actually win the first fight. Encore, too, is a solid choice, boosting your accuracy on any kill to hopefully help you land more precision blows.

As for Magnificent Howl itself, it’s a powerful perk you won’t find anywhere else, but it also requires skillful shooting and surviving long enough to reload the gun to take advantage of it. If that’s a lot of pressure, Desperate Measures at least can give you some bonus damage in more situations and without the need to be quite so accurate.

Luna’s Howl PvE God Roll

  • Barrel: Smallbore / Corkscrew Rifling
    • Smallbore: +7 Range, +7 Stability
    • Corkscrew Rifling: +5 Range, +5 Stability, +5 Handling
  • Magazine: Appended Mag
  • First Perk: Heal Clip
    • Reloading after a final blow grants Cure to you and nearby allies.
  • Second Perk: Incandescent
    • Defeating a target spreads Scorch to those nearby. More powerful combatants and opposing Guardians cause scorch in a larger radius.
  • Masterwork: Range / Reload Speed

Magnificent Howl is a solid perk even in PvE, thanks to the ability to knock out lots of small enemies quickly and reload for a bunch of more powerful rounds, but that’s a boost to your primary weapon you probably don’t seriously need. More interesting and probably more useful is the Solar synergy you get from Heal Clip and Incandescent. Knocking out enemies with Incandescent spreads scorch, which can be great for burning down tons of enemies quickly, and Heal Clip gives you and your pals a burst of healing every time you reload. Use Appended Mag to make sure you’re finishing those final blows to scorch as many enemies as possible or Flared Magwell to speed up your reloads alongside repeated healing.
