Deadpool 3 is Ryan Reynolds’ chance to fix X-Men’s confusing timeline | Films | Entertainment

Earlier this month Disney announced a collection of new projects at their annual event, D23. On top of the Star Wars news that came out of the glitzy occasion, Marvel boss Kevin Feige revealed a plethora of new films and TV shows on their way to theatres and Disney Plus. But Deadpool 3 was nowhere to be seen, despite previously being announced by the comic book corporation.

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds just dropped a surprise video on his social media accounts, where he opened up about the delay of his third Marvel movie.

He said: “We’re extremely sad to have missed D23, but we’ve been working very hard on the next Deadpool movie for a while now.” He noted how he has been striving to make the movie “special” and to keep it “true to the character” with “new depth, motivation and meaning”.

He rounded off the video by asking Hugh Jackman if he wanted to return to play Wolverine “one more time”. Jackman replied: “Yeah, sure Ryan.” The last moment of the video revealed the release date for the movie: September 6, 2024.

Deadpool’s return with Wolverine may kickstart the beginning of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s X-Men, but first, they have to remove all previous versions of the characters.

It is no secret that the X-Men series has been bogged down in confusing timeline madness over the past 20 years.

The original X-Men trilogy began in 2000 and finished in 2006. During that time, a number of major players in the X-Men series were introduced, including Jackman as Logan, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier, and Ian McKellen as Magneto, to name a few.

Shortly after this series came to an end, a new, prequel trilogy was created, which ran from 2011 to 2019. This, again, focused on the aforementioned Marvel heroes, but was set in the 1960s and through to the 1990s.

New actors, such as James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender, took on the classic mutants’ roles while utilising some time-bending abilities. Wolverine also received his own trilogy of films.

Deadpool has since made fun of this baffling timeline of movies in his films.

The meta hero has also made reference to the MCU in past films, despite them being completely separate from the string of Fox movies.

But with Deadpool 3 coming out as an official part of the ever-sprawling cinematic franchise, all of this is certain to change.

Reynolds is more than aware of how frustrated fans are about the sprawling timelines, and will no doubt want to induct Deadpool into the MCU with some flare and meaning.

And, considering the MCU’s multiverse has been well and truly ripped open after Spider-Man: No Way Home and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, anything is possible.

Who better to kill off the older franchise than the dimension-hopping meta-comedian Deadpool?

Reynolds has already pitched a movie to Marvel bosses that put a definitive end to the Fox universe, as well.

A leaker, Roger Wardell, previously reported: “Deadpool kills Fox’s Marvel Universe was one of the ideas pitched by Reynolds back in 2019. Michael Bay in talks to direct the movie.” (Via Flickering Myth)

And with Professor X’s arrival in Doctor Strange 2, it’s clear that Marvel is looking to start a new and improved version of the X-Men.

With Jackman, a fan favourite as Wolverine, it only makes sense for him to round off the series he started 22 years ago.
