A new first-person mod makes the original Dead Space even more horrifying. Even though the 2008 title lacks the visual might of Dead Space remake, the original game now offers a different angle to take on the horrors of USG Ishimura thanks to a fan-made first-person mod.
Developed by a modder called ReverseEngineeringGamer, Dead Space’s first-person mod allows you to witness the perils of USG Ishimura from the very eyes of the protagonist Isaac Clarke. And it does that exceptionally well despite the lack of official support. The 13-minute-long showcase of the mod reveals how the modder tweaked the interfaces to better suit the first-person perspective. And it is safe to say that almost every aspect of their work seems smooth enough. In addition to an immersive running animation, the new first-person mod for Dead Space also allows the player to zoom a bit closer.
It is interesting to see the drastic impact of the switch from the third-person to first-person perspective on Visceral Games’ 2008 title. Even though the original Dead Space is known for its spine-chilling atmosphere where you can also see Isaac, witnessing the events from the eyes of the protagonist is a solid boost to immersion as well. Despite having a huge impact on the game, the core of the mod took five days to develop, the modder said.
As the game wasn’t tailored for a first-person experience, ReverseEngineeringGamer had some difficulty adjusting the game to the new perspective. “Admittedly there were some frustrating times while making this mod,” they noted on the mod’s page. But the fine-tuning of the mod, on the other hand, required several months of developing and polishing.
It is also worth noting that the modder didn’t plan to create a first-person mod at first. “Although initially started out of curiosity as to see what else I can do other than create a free cam […] this quickly grew into a first-person mod project,” which definitely had a fantastic result. While most of the hit examples of the survival-horror genre tend to offer a third-person perspective, it is safe to say that the first-person perspective complements the essence of the genre as well.
