Dead Cells Devs Want Upcoming Accessibility Options to Remain “Tough But Fair”

Developer Evil Empire share details about future update surrounding accessibility options while hoping to keep the game “tough but fair”.

Dead Cells Devs Want Upcoming Accessibility Options to Remain “Tough But Fair”

In a future update, Dead Cells will be receiving new accessibility features which include the option to auto-hit, continue and use assist modes. In an interview with Twinifite, the developer Evil Empire explained that while the main fun experience in Dead Cells is its “tough but fair experience” this can “be complicated for some people”, so they plan in introducing some new modes that will cater to more ways to play.

The continue mode will allow players to instead of restarting after a death, give the more forgivable option to let you restart where you died with the same build. The auto-hit mode will also gain this continue option, a mode that was inspired by the mobile version of Dead Cells.

Continue Mode, Auto-Hit and more are coming in a future update for Dead Cells

Other features include the option to rebind sticks on gamepad, the developer Arthur Decamp explains that they wanted to give more options for players as they may not use all buttons for movement. This means players can adjust the buttons to how they feel best to play. Marketing manager Matthew Houghton also explained that if you prefer to hold a button rather than button mash, this will be an option too. The UI is also getting an overhaul making the UI bigger, the option for colours, font sizes and even font type, so things can be seen easier.

These features were outlined and more are currently available to test in the Dead Cells alpha which was released earlier last month:

  • Continue mode – each time you die you can resurrect from the beginning of the biome (this effectively already existed by quitting the game when you die, now it’s just ‘official’)
  • Auto-hit mode – automatically target nearby enemies with your primary melee weapon. The one time that the mobile version was ahead of us!
  • Adjustable trap damage, enemy damage and enemy health in % increments
  • Option for slower parry window and trap speed

This update sounds like it will have a number of ways to adjust in-game settings to suit all kinds of players which is great news. Hopefully these new modes will also entice newer players to try out the game. Dead Cells has seen a number of updates post-launch which has added some great additions including downloadable content such as The Queen of The Sea and crossover content with fellow indie heroes in the free Everyone Here update.
