Christopher Nolan Provides Clues About His Next Movie

Christopher Nolan is one of the most famous directors in Hollywood, and everyone is wondering what he might make next after Oppenheimer. We don’t know yet, but the filmmaker has now indicated it will be another “large-scale” film like he’s known for.

Speaking to Time Magazine, Nolan said he enjoyed the movie Past Lives in part because it felt “subtle.” But Nolan’s next movie probably won’t be subtle–it’ll more likely be a big-budget film.

“I’m drawn to working at a large scale because I know how fragile the opportunity to marshal those resources is,” Nolan said. “I know that there are so many filmmakers out there in the world who would give their eye teeth to have the resources I put together, and I feel I have the responsibility to use them in the most productive and interesting way.”

Nolan’s first blockbuster was Batman Begins in 2005, which he followed up with sequels The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises. These could be described as big “event” films. After that, he made Inception, Interstellar, Dunkirk, Tenet, and most recently Oppenheimer. All of these films could be characterized as “large-scale,” and so it’s no big surprise to assume Nolan will continue down that track with his next movie.

What that will be, however, is unknown right now. Many have wondered if Nolan could direct the next James Bond movie, but the director himself said no one should expect this, even though he previously said it would be “enormous privilege” to do so.

Nolan isn’t likely to divulge his next movie until after Oppenheimer completes its awards season run. It’s nominated for 13 Academy Awards, the most of any movie for this year.

While we might have to wait a while longer to see Nolan’s next movie, he’s bringing back his 2020 film, Tenet, and releasing it in IMAX 70mm at theaters across the US in February.

Oppenheimer is available now to buy or rent, and it will come to Peacock on February 16.
