Chainsaw Man: What Are Fiends

0

Mixing humans and devils can get messy and a little confusing. Anyway, here’s all you need to know about Fiends in Chainsaw Man.

The world of Chainsaw Man is full of humans and devils. The devils fight to feed on the humans while the humans have created the Devil Hunter profession to hunt down and kill the monsters. With them existing together, there are many ways for devils and humans to interact beyond just fighting. Devils are then broken into three categories, Devils, Hybrids, and Fiends – the latter two being a mix of both humans and devils.

Humans and devils are able to team up and work together by sharing one body, much like with Denji and Pochita. Pochita has replaced Denji’s heart, making him a Hybrid. When Denji transforms into the Chainsaw man, he keeps his human intelligence and consciousness while having the abilities of the Chainsaw Devil.

Fiends Can Be Powerful, But Not As Much As Hybrids

A Fiend is different, as in this case, a devil will possess the dead body of a human and completely take over. In the instance of a Fiend, it is very rare for the human mind to still exist, and only in the rarest of occasions can the two coexist. While in a Fiend form, the devil is not as strong as it usually would be but is able to look and act like other humans. In some instances, like the Fiend in the second episode, they are quite often weak zombie-like creatures. A Fiend is much easier to kill than most devils.

Another unique instance of a Fiend introduced in the second episode is Power. Power looks and acts like a human but does have horns on her head. It is usual for a Fiend to have a trait from their devil form on the human body they now wear. In Power’s instance, it is in the form of her horns. A Fiend can also use the devil’s powers, just in a weaker form. In Power’s instance, she can still mold and shape her blood into weapons to fight with. Power is also unique because she shows that a Fiend can be highly reasonable and can work with humans as devil hunters.

As for the other Fiend, earlier in episode 2, the creature is shown with pincers on its face as it eats a bird. While Aki wants to see Denji’s devil abilities, he takes down the Fiend with minimal effort and a single swing of an axe. Denji initially offers Pochita his body should he ever die, but it seems that Pochita’s hybrid idea is much better.

Becoming a Fiend will often be the last resort for a devil as they will be in a weakened state and can only transform into their devil form for a short period. Fiends are still able to heal by consuming blood but can only become so strong from that.
