Introducing the topic, Dermot O’Leary informed Carol and Gyles Brandreth that one in five people drink from unwashed mugs and confess to re-wearing dirty underwear.

As he read the filthy habits, which included people leaving unwashed dishes to pile up and not changing their bedsheets for over a month, the three stars were disgusted.

Pulling grotesque faces, both Alison and Carol shook their heads in disbelief as Gyles asked: “Who are these people?”

Laughing at the absurdity, the This Morning host quickly asked Dermot who was admitting to doing such things.

Dermot replied: “That’s a really good point because if you’re admitting to it, you’re probably doing a sanitised version of how bad it really is, so it’s probably even worse.”

Cutting in, Carol asked: “So how often should you change your pants?”

Without hesitation, Alison told the 62-year-old people should change their underwear everyday, although Dermot was stunned by the question.

Reiterating her question, he said: How often should you change your pants? Is that the question you are asking?

“One of the foremost minds of her generation in this country is asking.”

Collapsing back onto the sofa giggling over Dermot’s outraged reaction, Alison burst out laughing.

He continued: “The woman who has made seismic change at a government level, a mathematical genius, is asking how often you should change your pants!”

Gyles replied: “She could have been saying, ‘What are pants?’ but she wasn’t.”

The former Countdown host couldn’t stop laughing as Dermot threw himself back on the couch, looking up in disbelief.

Although ITV viewers are used to seeing Alison and Dermot host This Morning on Fridays, the pair have been holding down the fort since Phillip Schofield announced his exit.

The long-running presenter decided to step down from his role on the show after two decades following reports he’d fallen out with his onscreen co-star Holly Willoughby.

Since his departure, Holly has taken an extended leave from the show and is set to return at the start of June.

This Morning continues weekdays on ITV from 10am.
