Bryan Fuller Exits Peacock’s Friday The 13th Prequel Series

Jason Voorhees hasn’t killed anyone on screen since the Friday the 13th reboot film in 2009. And it looks like Jason’s going to have to keep waiting before picking up a machete again. Showrunner Bryan Fuller has announced that he has departed the Friday the 13th prequel series that was set up at Peacock by A24.

“Adapting classic horror is something I have some experience with,” wrote Fuller on X. “These shows require a vision that elevates and transforms, as well as delivers what audiences have come to expect, which is an ambitious and risky endeavor. It requires people to take the leap with me. When it works, as with Hannibal, the results can be powerful for the storytellers and the audience. I couldn’t be more proud of the work my co-showrunner Jim Danger Gray and I were able to accomplish with our brilliant writing staff despite the challenges we faced.”

“For reasons beyond our control, A24 has elected to go a different way with the material,” continued Fuller. “We hope the final product will be something Friday the 13th fans all over the world will enjoy.”

Fuller’s exit from the series was first reported by the InSneider newsletter, but Variety notes that the Friday the 13th prequel series remains in place at Peacock and that the search for a new showrunner has begun.

The original Friday the 13th movie was released in 1980, and featured Jason’s mother, Pamela Voorhees, as the killer who was out for revenge for her dead son. Fuller previously stated that Jason would have been featured in the prequel series. But with the show heading in a new creative direction with another showrunner, it’s unclear if that will still be the case.
