During a double feature of The Mummy and The Mummy Returns in London, Brendan Fraser decided to surprise the audience before the movies rolled. He even showed up in Rick O’Connell’s costume with a leather jacket.
Variety reports Fraser brought up the British connection between these two films and The Prince Charles Cinema audience while speaking before the crowd. “I am proud to stand before you tonight,” he said. “This is a film that was made in Britain. You should know that! Even the second one, too. Be proud. Thank you for being here.”
Fraser also discussed the unknown nature of what he was working on with the first Mummy back in the late 1990s. “We didn’t know if it was a drama or a comedy or an action or a horror picture or a romance… all the above,” he said. “We had no idea until it tested in front of British audiences.”
The actor just received his first Academy Award nomination of his career. Fraser is up for Best Actor at the Oscars for his role in The Whale, in which he plays a 600-pound man attempting to reconnect with his daughter.
As for the future, Fraser has been open about reprising his role as O’Connell in another Mummy flick. He appeared as the character in three Mummy movies, though didn’t show up in the 2017 reboot starring Tom Cruise.
The actor will next show up in Killers of the Flower Moon, which is directed by Martin Scorcese and stars Leonardo DiCaprio.
