Blizzard Announced Blizzcon 2024 Is Cancelled

The gaming world has several annual events that celebrate everything from the industry as a whole to specific franchises. One of these emblematic events is BlizzCon, organized by Blizzard to celebrate its various franchises and announce the latest news about its games.

Blizzcon 2024 Is Cancelled

This year was supposed to be a particularly special occasion as it marks 30 years since the release of World of Warcraft, the company’s most iconic game. However, Blizzard has just delivered bad news to fans: BlizzCon 2024 has been canceled.

The news was announced through an official statement on the BlizzCon website. There, Blizzard commented that the decision was not easy, but no reason was given for why this year’s edition will not take place. The company left the door open to return to this format in future years and also briefly discussed its plans for events this year.

Blizzard clarified that they are planning various in-person events around the world to celebrate the anniversary of World of Warcraft, although they did not specify which parts of the world they have chosen. The studio mentioned that they will soon share more details about their plans, which also include this year’s Gamescom scheduled for late August.

The End of The Show As We Know It?

While there are no official reasons for the event’s cancellation, some speculate that it may be due to a lack of content to announce. World of Warcraft will receive a trilogy of expansions that have already been announced, as will Diablo IV with its expansion Vessel of Hatred.

This would leave games like Overwatch 2, whose popular opinion is not good enough, at the forefront of the entire event. Something similar had happened when BlizzCon 2012 was canceled, and at that time, Blizzard’s Community Manager had commented that the studio did not believe it had anything new or big to talk about. That same year, Diablo III and the Mists of Pandaria expansion for World of Warcraft had been released.

The only other two cancellations for which there are concrete reasons were BlizzCon 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and BlizzCon 2022, as Blizzard was in the midst of harassment allegations. Blizzard was also recently affected by Microsoft’s massive wave of layoffs. Around 1900 employees lost their jobs in the company, and both Xbox and Activision Blizzard personnel were affected.
